anybody got a knife?

Until this day, the guy still doesn't understand why my friend got so worked up over it.

Clearly, an idiot :( The older I get, the less inclined I am to lend knives to anyone too stupid to be carrying one themselves.

I hand them a stanley box-cutter. Carried along for such situations- gotta think a couple of steps ahead.

I carry two knives at work, a beater and my EDC. I don't lend out either knife. If someone asked to borrow a knife I say "what are you going to cut?" then I either say no or I volunteer to cut it for them.

I look at it like this: if they need to borrow a knife they're unprepared and not a knife person and will most likely misuse it. If they need a knife maybe they should spend the $10-$15 and get one.

I lent a knife to someone before.
He cut a hole in a 1500 pound bag of wheat...which I got blamed for.

Or you get the idiot who cuts themself on your knife, who then makes it out to be your fault.

My knife = my usage. Go get your own, or have me cut it for you if I have the time.

People that I know are aware that I carry a knife. They also know that I won't lend it out to them.

I ask them what for, and if they say screwdriver, scraper, prying, opening a can, etc I hand them the Victorinox Super Tinker in my left pocket with the appropriate tool pulled out.

lol @ grill scraping

There was a big thread a month or two ago about loaning out knives.

I was on a big fishing trip, cut something with my Benchmade mini-griptilian then set it down on a table. I turned back to pick it up and it was gone, my uncle had picked it up to scrape out a big cast iron pot that they use to cook fish in. I didn't actually loan it to him but the result was the same.

I learned a long time ago to ask "what do you need it for" when someone asked to borrow a knife. More often than not they would want to use it as a screwdriver, or pry something open, or whatever. Almost always something OTHER than cutting with it.

I've been carrying a multitool a lot lately along with my usual folder and I could use that as a loaner. I'm also experimenting with carrying a fully serrated blade in addition to my normal folder. I've got a SE Ladybug and a SE Hawkbill but I'm thinking about trying something like a Delica. I think that would be a candidate to loan to people if they were actually going to cut with it.

I was once in a restaurant in Barcelona when a young woman at our table asked if her boyfriend could borrow my SAK. When I asked what he wanted to use it for, she said that he wanted to use it to clean some dog mess off his shoes! I was glad I asked!

Everybody at work knows by now that I always have a knife, and that it is sharper and more capable than the boxcutters we are issued. They ask me to cut whatever it is for them.

TOTALLY depends on the person and the general area I'm in. (In an office, they're probably opening boxes or letters, give it to em'. But in a garage or the woods for example, I'll look at the job first.)
My "better" friends that I know more and talk to alot, know I'm a knife-knut. They won't abuse it, so I'll let them use it.
Believe it or not, some members of my FAMILY think I'm crazy and see nothing wrong with prying, scraping, slamming a knife. They think it's "use"...........

I learned a long time ago ~~ I don't loan out my Knife or my Gun or my Car or Truck as most people do not care or think about what they are doing about something that is not there property and to cheap to buy there own.! Lose a friend here and there but what I have I bought and paid for is mine to do as I want.!*

i never thought about it untill i started carrying nicer fixedblades as edc but how do yall respond when someone asks if you have a knife they can use? do you hand it to them and let them do what they need to do with it or do ask what for then decide? ive found myself doing the latter and even completed the task for them sometimes.just wondering if im the only one
It depends on who is asking. A good many of my friends are tool people and are careful of tools. If one of them happens to be without a knife, they get the knife. If it is someone who I do not know to be tool friendly, they get the question, "What is it you need to cut?" And likely I will cut it for them.

I don't hand my knife to anyone unless they know how much it cost and that they'll be buying a damaged knife at NIB price if it comes back to me in any type of degraded form. So basically, no one uses my knives. If someone needs something cut then I'll do the cutting.

In the hands of someone who just doesn't give a damn (most non knife nuts) that knife can be a deadly hazard. That's like someone asking me if they can borrow my pistol for a just a minute. Negative, sir, you can not.

Where I work we are 'advised' to only use the POS box cutters they provide for us... My boss knows Im a knife guy so he just tells me to only wear the smallest knives I have. I always carry two, Ive only handed one of my knives to two friends, one from work and one while shooting. One just because he wanted to look at it at work.. I alway warn, if you drop my knife you owe me a new one, and tell them the cost of the knife. They were careful with my knives, but one of them did cut his finger pretty good trying to feel if it was sharp. :D The other friend, in the desert, just held it with two hands, as if he were inspecting/appreciating a piece of art.. then handed it back to me with a huge smile and asked, "when I want to buy a knife will you help me find a good one?" Ive never really had people ask to USE my knife at work because they all carry a POS razor and while theyre busy trying to put the little box cutter back together I usually cut whatever they need cut.

I have had people ask while hunting/fishing/camping and I usually just hand them my Cold Steel Peace Keeper 2, a nice but inexpensive and very used double edged fixed blade. But NOBODY gets to use my babies but me and my wife, yeah.. Shes a knife knut. I just see it like this.. They might get upset because you dont let them use YOUR knives at will... but they would feel alot worse if you beat the hell out of them for f___ing up your knife...and them made them buy you a new one.

Only if I know the person, and that they aren't going to do something stupid. The people at work are mostly knife people, or at least respect them. The worst that will happen would be getting tape residue on one from opening a box.

that's showed you what type of person he really is! i would have a hard time acting civil to someone after a situation like that.

Indeed! I'd never met either of them before (or since). It was one of those situation where you end up in restaurant/bar with a load of people, some of whom you don't know. The woman spoke English and seemed to want to practice it. Her boyfriend was a sullen type. I mainly spoke to other people. But what a thing to ask! Incredible isn't it? I must have used my knife for something, and he had said something to her. She asked me if he could borrow it, and when I asked her what for....I'd actually forgotten about it, but how gross! Needless to say he didn't get the loan of my knife! What a pig!

Some of these stories are out of control. I have lent knives, I mostly worry about some dumb ass cutting themselves... In fact I had a friend hand a knife back and there was blood on the handle. I asked what happened and he cut his thumb flipping the blade...
