I talking about the Becker Companion made by Blackjack (Effingham). I have one I'm doing a total regrind on plus handle replacement. I was curious if anyone knew what type of carbon steel was used to make them? It sparks like 5160 but I don't think that's what was used. It's a stout piece, made with 1/4" thick steel. Thanks
Scott

If memory serves it's 0176-6, the same stuff Bark River uses in their goloks and Cold Steel uses in their big knives, Trailmaster, SRK, etc. Pretty tough and holds it's edge well. From my reading I gather it it very close to 52100 in chemistry, it's called 52100B or something close to that. Lookin' forward to my PSK knife Scott. You gonna be able to send it out for heat treat tomorrow? Just realized this is a Black Jack knife, pre Camillus so this info probably doesn't apply. Sorry, I'm not sure what it is then.

That is the one.
PC356, I'll be heat treating 5 PSK knives and an A2 knife tomorrow. This stinkin heat wave is making it rough. Bad enough it's 100 plus degrees outside, but when you're standing in front on a HT furnace at 1800 to 2000 degrees, it ain't fun. :D No big deal about the steel type, just curious.

I know what you mean Bakerys are hot also whew!! Save a PSK for me when I show up at WAR:)

Mine had a VERY thick edge and is impossible to get sharp. Maybe I need a grinder, but can't cut 550 cord!

I picked up one of the ones done in gray coating of some kind - also with a very thick edge.

You don't need a grinder, just a benchstone, or a rock. The angle is likely more obtuse than what you are grinding and thus you are not hitting the edge itself. Regrind until the bevels meet and it will get sharp. It won't cut well until a relief grind is applied.

Yes it was very thick. I was able to do a full convex grind with a thinner edge. It's a near zero secondary bevel now.

I have one that I purchaes a couple years ago, originally mis- identified as a bk-7, this is a companion

I took the scales apart and filled them with devcon, added a finger choil,

raised the bevel considerably, added a ridge back, no function but looks cool as hell

one of my favorite knives, endless possibilities and built like a tank.

Spent some time on the edge, its hair popping sharp and a pry bar to boot.

Because I filled the handle with devcon I was able to remove a lot of material for a custom grip

scfishr, that looks great. I'm doing an exposed pommel with 1/4" thick black canvas micarta. I wanted to slim down the handle profile. It will have slight contours on the scales. Thanks for sharing the link.

razorback,

the exposed/extended pommel is a great idea,

when I get the chance to do another I intend to use micarta

and will also use the pommel,

by the way I have admired your knives for some time

divorce changes things, namely expendable income

but if I ever have a chance to own one of your knives, I surely will

Hope you post pictures of the finished product

In the mean time, good luck with your custom knives

Thanks scfishr. I really like doing these mods. Just wish I had more time to play around with different knives. I'll post a pic when it finished.

Doc Canada, The Last Confederate

you have made my day, haven`t laughed that hard in a while

Here is a pic of the knife. I used black canvas micarta and left the pommel exposed. Still have to make a sheath. With the edge reprofiled, it sharpens up nicely.
