Anybody have a Kindle???

My boss can't recommend her Kindle enough. She absolutely loves it and that's what I hope to get my wife for Christmas. She can go through 3 or 4 books a week, I think the Kindle can hold 1000.

I have 2200 books on mine and it is listed as holding 3500.

:thumbup: Another +1 on the Kindle. I love it. I have been a voracious reader most of my life, and having the ability to carry around hundreds (thousands?) of books in a jacket pocket is one of modern technology's greatest gifts.
Who would have thought this to be even possible just a decade or so ago.
I don't use the web browser, email etc, but as an ebook reader it is worth it's weight in gold.

I've been reading on a Sony 505 for the past 1+ year and haven't even thought to buy a paper book since. I read 2-3 books a week, and that could get expensive with paper books. There are so many sites that offer either free or reduced prices that I have a backlog of several thousand books waiting to be read.

My reader is plain vanilla. It doesn't connect wirelessly, no dictionary, no annotations, nothing. It's just like a real book, which is all I need. Except that right now I have over 250 books in it, so when I finish one there is no waiting to start another. And if I don't like one after the first few chapters, I can just delete it and start a different one. Best thing to happen to reading since eyeglasses!

Gave my wife one as Sunday gift :) It is Kindle 3 with 3G. She loves everything about it, esp. the screen. I had a bunch of old books in .fb2 format on DVDs. Converted them to MOBI with the Calibre and transferred to the Kindle via USB. Great stuff!

Good call on Calibre. This program is a godsend to ebook readers.

I like my Kindle but don't really use it enough to justify any kind of rave reviews. Sure, the readibility of e-ink is great, battery life is awesome, the ability to download any one of millions of ebooks in mere seconds, yadda yadda yadda... It's a one trick pony. It does what it set out to do and does it VERY well. But getting the Kindle app on my Iphone was pretty much the death blow to any kind of ultra portable use my Kindle was destined for. Now I can show up at a cafe or doctor's office and have three or four killer novels right there on my phone. Problem solved. To be honest, my Kindle pretty much stays in the john nowadays.

Don't worry, I'll hose it down with Lysol if I ever put in up for sale in the exchange.

I think you`ve missed the point. Kindle is for reading. Iphone is for calling. Each device has its primary purpose.

I have a gizmo called the Pandigital Novel. It is primarily an ereader, but it also has tablet-ish functions like full color, net browsing, email, music, photos, touch screen. Basically, it is like a poor man's iPad, I suppose. I am quite happy with it. My only gripes are that it has a backlit screen, which is not as nice to look at as e-ink, and the battery life is not nearly that of a Kindle. Still, it is a cool device and cost less than $200.

I would say the primary purpose of the iPhone is not for calling. Its primary purpose is to do everything at least acceptably well.

There are smaller cell phones if you want to call people. There are netbooks if you want a portable web interface. There are GPS units that give directions. There are MP3 players if you want to listen to music. There are readers if you want to read books. There are digital cameras that take better pictures. Each of these will do their task better, easier, more conveniently or cheaper than an iphone will.

The thing is, the iPhone will do them all in onc (relativly) small, easy to carry device. That's why I carry an iPhone, not because its best at any of these tasks, but becuase its one device that I always have with me that can do all those tasks good enough for me. :D

I think the Amazon Kindle is a great looking reader and if you want something for that task its a great choice. Personally, I would rather put up with just a bit less convenient reading experience rather than have to carry around yet another piece of technology with me all the time.
