anybody here ever have there balis taken by cops?

Not really cops but customs took 3 balisong from me ten years ago when I was returning from PI. Was passing through customs when they x-rayed my bags and ripped them open. They just took the balisongs and then let us go through. Really was a not fun situation as since those balisongs were all gifts from family. Also the bastards threw all the contents of the bag around as well as ripping up the support tape that was around it. Left us there to try and quickly put all our stuff back in the bag and make our connection.

I got pulled over for a minor raffic violation. took my required ID and insurance out of my glove box and the LEO happened to see my repinned Herbertz. He said he had to take it because he wasnt sure I could possess one (I think thats what he said...Its been awhile. I posted what happened months ago. I havent created many posts so Im sure you can find it easily) I went down to the Station and talked to a friend of mine. He poked around and said that no bali had brought in. So I guess someone has a decent present

Hey guys!! just so you all know LEOs can't not just take knives from you without filling out a "green sheet" . Its a form showing what was taken ,when, way all that! The next day take the sheet to the Police Station and you can get it back!! By law they have to fill one out when they take something from you!!Just tell them you want a receipt for it so they just can't stick it in there pocket!!

<filing that away for future reference>

Day late and a dollar short in my case :)

You guys didnt know that?
Anyway I can proudly say that I have never hd anythng confinscated. Officers have tried bt tono avail. I hate when an ofier thinks he can make up he law as he goes, like he dosent think I'm old enough to have a knife so he'll just take it. But he's right, no receipt no knife.

I too have never had any of my balisongs taken away from me.Most of the time,if an LEO stops me for any reason,I'm friendly and polite..and show intelligence.I've never had one find any reason to perform a search on me,or on my vehicle when I had one.
It also helps if you know how to distract them...like asking questions that lead to a different subject..hehehe.Quite often, they'll forget to think about searching anything. :)

Just don't give them *any* *reason* to search you,and you'll probably get away without the search. There are as always...the exceptions...the LEO's who are hardly trusting of anyone and the ones who are just plain jerks.I've known many in my time, since I taught a bunch how to use balisongs.

In my case it was northern Colorado, driving throught a small town. Got pulled over because my headlight was out, and the officer asked if I had any weapons on me... "I have two pocket knives" I replied. I loved the expression in his voice before he went back for backup "TWO!!" My repinned Jag was sitting behind the drivers seat unbeknownst to me. Got me out, patted me down, held on to the two under 3.5" blades I had on my person, and I gave them permission to search the car for other weapons.

The way I interpeted CO law was it is leagal to carry a knife as long as the blade is under 3.5" and not concealed. I was not carrying the 4" balisong, and I gave that defense to the officer, who said its leagal only if you are in the martial arts... (I have heard no stipulation on this regarding knives) I asked for a receipt, didin't get one. Should have insisted on one. The officers gave back the two linerlocks I had and gave me a warning for the headlight. (no paper record in my hands of who pulled me over.)

Apparently it is leagal to have a loaded handgun in plain view on the back seat of the car, but if there is a securely latched balisong there, watch out!

The moral of the story: Get names of the officers who pulled you over and a paper record in YOUR hands of what happened. That way, when you check the office that they tell you to go to recover your property, it should actually be there.

out here in nj balis are illegal, and being on probation i no longer carry mine. but i had acouple close calls though. cops in my town automaticly assume that if your driving at night youre probably drunk, stoned, or stealing something. ive been patted down and had my car searched but they never found my knife haning from a small clip under my belt inside my pants. (i made my own sheath for a guitar strap and a money clip.) (and by the way im on probation for possesion of stolen property, not any sort of violence.) anyway about getting a "green sheet" can you actually get it back even though theyre not legal? im not so sure about that....

that sucks that your on probation... what stolen stuff did you have?

O.K. Here's the deal, Todd 1 is right about the green sheet. (I am a patrolman). First and foremost NO officer can search your person or vehicle w/o either (1)probable cause that you have a weapon or illegal contraband or (2) Your permission. And No you don't have to give it.Really why would anyone say Yes, but they do all the time.
Think about it if an Officer can search why would they ask????
If something is taken from you you should be charged, more than likely unless you're showing your ass this isn't going to happen. Unless you have priors(convictions) it'll most likely be dismissed anyway. Also if you are charged, some sort of property sheet has to be done(green sheet). This form shows the court and department where the knife went after it left your hands and went to the officers, you sign it like a receipt. ***One more thing, yes they're are cops who don't follow this and like evey profession there are good and bad. For one minute think about something, I realize most people reading this tries to respect and does obey the law and that's why it seems an intrusion when an Officer asks if you have any weapons in your car when they stop you, but at 3a.m. in the morning it is frightening walking up on a vehicle and Hell yes I want to know if you have any weapons be it a Benchmade 42 or a pointy stick. But unless like I said you give me probable cause to believe you do or give me permission to look will just address why you got stopped. Be safe.

Okay, so if you're walking down the street and for some reason are stopped by an LEO, and they ask if you have any weapons, do you have to answer that? Or can you just say, "I don't have to answer that question." What if they ask someone under 18, do they have to answer without a parent present?

Now, what if you say you don't (but actually do), and they ask to search you. Do you have to consent to that search? If you do, what would happen if they found a weapon on you after you said you had not been carrying any? It seems like they would be more likely to arrest you.

Why would you just be walking down the street and asked "Do you have any weapons on you" Without Probable Cause to stop and ask you and especially to actually search you, no matter what was found it would be DISMISSED due to the fact that your 4th ammendment right to unlawful search and seizure would be violated!!!!

What Disector is tring to say is ,if your carring don't do anything so f*cking stupid that would cause a LEO to ask you if you have something. use a little common sence!

I got to say it does happen. I was walking down the street one night when a squad stopped me and a friend and immediately started searching us, they didnt ask us if they could search us, they told us that we were going to be searched. Asked them why they were searching us they said because they had a report that someone was breaking car windows in the area. When they didnt find anything on us and after running our ids they let us go.

You should have taken a sh*t on their badges and told them not to touch you.:D You'd be in a pickle then wouldn't you!! :D

Disector: if someone is on a Ride-along with an officer (don't who else they'd ride along with but anyway) can they carry concealed fixed blades or balisongs? Also keep in mind that they are 17 but are friends with the officer and has gone on several ride-alongs before. Thanks.
