I've heard of hunters using "pig stickers" i.e spears or long knives but has anyone here ever tried it? I'm on the verge of putting my name in the hat for one of these hunts and want to know what I'm getting into and what I might need.

I have hunted BO-HAWGZ for years, we use Pittbulls and Knives. Most of the guys carry 7" Ka-Bars. I have in the past used a BK-7 and a CR Green Beret. I am deployed right now and have since gotten a Busse, BATAC. I will try it out when I get home. We all carry some type of hand gun as a back up. HK45 for me. Good Luck!

Some outfitter's online website had a lot of pictures of hunters who had gone pig hunting. It showed them with their pigs and their knives. Looked like almost everyone had gotten their pigs with Buck 110's, or similar.

It looks like the chase dogs "hold" the pig, and you kind of wade in their, and give it a good stabbing.:(

I have wondered many times, whether I had the nerve to do this. Maybe, someday.

Its simple, the catch dog’s grab and hold the pig, you run in grab the pigs hind legs a pull them out from under him. Then climb on…slide the blade under the neck and cut the wind pipe. I have seen some guys stick the knife in behind the plate on the shoulder, if you use this technique you have to get it right the first time, or you will have one pissed off animal to deal with.

...Dan Koster in these forums makes some fine "hog stickers"...Not only that...he tries 'em out on the hogs himself...Might not be a bad idea to have a chat with Dan...
...Here's his forum page and ...Here's his website...Nice guy...just ask him about hogs and the tools to take 'em with...:)

Me and a buddy discussed going deer hunting in the same manner as his and my Native American forefathers went hunting, USING AN ATLATL! We were gonna dress up in deer capes head attached, to be able to stalk with in dart range, the when we got close enough snap to and release the darts. I talked to the area possum sherrif (conservation officer) told him our plans and wondered if it was covered under the primitive hunting style. and he wouldnt hear of it, told me if he cuaght me I'd go to jail, I ask him what was wrong with it and he said the law doesnt specifically mention it. But you should read the law as what it does mention are your only options. I said but it is primitive, he was adamant... i do it i get a whippin,

so oh well maybe some other time some other place,

Jason

Jason, sounds like the cons. officer just didn't know, so he said no.
Should be the same rules as bow hunting, don't give up yet, that sounds like a fun time.
You will have to be be quick as heck when you "snap to," and you will probably be aiming at a moving target too.

JS there has been much talk online about the technique your mentioning. I think it would be a challenge for sure, the only thing I would be worried about would be getting shot by someone else. Good luck in your endeavors.

I really don't understand. Why would you want to do this rather than just use a gun? We have big brains, this seems sort of primitive and cruel.

On that note, I know a couple of guys who hunt hogs with an atlatl and darts.

Dan Koster or Tom Krein would be able to point you in the right direction for hunting Boar with Knives. Both makes knives designed for the task & have personally tested them.

Wow! the Graham Bros. knife in that link is awesome, almost too nice to use for hunting... only 3/16" thick steel though? well I suppose it would penetrate easier at that thickness.

A lot of the old hog hunters in my AO are dog/knife hunters. Me........ I guess I'm a sissy, cause I used a longbow or recurve bow. :D

recondo4u, I haven't heard of slitting the throat .All i've heard is to cut the heart and blood vessels just above the heart. [proper slaughtering of a pig also cuts the blood vessels above the heart] They've had interesting discussions of this on www.accuratereloading.com. Use a 8-12" blade with guard and strong point and don't hesitate while the dogs hold the pig. I've seen videos of this properly done and the pig dies quickly.

About ten years ago I did this using a knife I made. Ten inch blade with sharpened back edge. It was very effective and very fast. I cut the hog behind the shoulder and severed the heart and lungs. The hog siezed up almost immediately and within maybe 5 seconds it was over. Dogs were used and am not sure you could do it without them, at least not very easily.

I was very excited about it until it was over. It was actually more like slaughtering a hog that a dog was holding than anything else. The boar was about #320-340. I was hoping for more "adventure" than it turned out to be. It is not hard to do just make sure you have someone with you that has done it before or is at least used to being around hogs that size. Don't expect it to be some kind of "out of body experience" but if it is something you want to do then go for it.
