Anybody here lift?

I know the difference. I just do not see the effectiveness of them.(butterfly pull-ups)

Glenoid Labrum tears are not much more fun that wrecked rotator cuffs. If that is what I can see from trying them, then i'll pass. ;)

People think kipping pull-ups is cheating because it is cheating. You are using so much momentum it's easier to do than a 1/4 ROM pull up. The reason why they use kipping pull-ups for crossfit is because an average Joe who doesn't train, can't even do ONE strict form pull-up, much less a total of 50 (Fran, Crossfit's benchmark exercise).

You are right about one thing though, and that it is more cardio oriented because of the constant prolonged rapid movement. Crossfit was originally developed as a type of training geared towards military, LEO, firefighters because it is more conditioning based. So no doubt it's a GREAT workout granted you have a solid foundation, you stick with the original exercises (ie. Fran) instead of the crazy whacky ones they developed nowadays, and you do it OCCASIONALLY.

Your average Joe A) does not have a solid lifting foundation and B) they don't need to be in tip top condition to save lives/fight for their lives. Pro athletes tear their bodies apart for a big payday.... SOME military, LEO, firefighters tear their bodies apart to save lives. There is a reason why those professions typically have such a short life span.

IMO the key to fitness is to ensure that you can keep doing it for your entire lifetime. I realized that recently when my body started falling apart from all those years of hard lifting (lifting explosively, olympic lifting). I backed it off a LOT, because I want to be able to lift until I'm 60 yrs old. Most of those hardcore crossfitters you see on TV/youtube probably won't be able to lift a 5lb dumbbell by the time they turn 40.

I couldn't agree more with you on the negative longterm effects of heavy explosive lifting. It does work, but your joints and ligaments take a beating.

I'm not saying that crossfit is correct. I'm just saying that kip's are an actual exercise. Comparing it to another exercise isn't really fair. If done incorrectly yeah, you're gonna get hurt. Just like if you squat wrong or bench press wrong.
I think one problem is that a lot of folks confuse HIIT or kipping exercises with all the weird / dangerous crossfit stuff out there. Or just lump it all together without really understanding it. In reality, kips can be a great way to learn and train for an exercise that your not quite strong enough to do "strictly." In the end everyone has to decide for themselves what they can handle.
Just my two cents though.

Actually I would say that kipping pullups are not all that great for folks without much strength (i.e. <5 strict pull ups). Those folks would be better served building up strength with strict pull ups and doing their metabolic conditioning with jumping pull ups. Kipping comes into its own when you have athletes who are already "strong" wishing to get more "fit".

Doing high volume kipping pull ups as part of a HIIT workout tests your metabolic conditioning and maximum power output. TLO is quite right in that crossfit started as a program to get LEO's, firefighters and EMT's more fit with very limited amounts of time to spend at the gym. With that goal in mind things like fran and kipping pull ups are very good IMHO.

Crossfit is probably not the right program for people only starting out on their fitness journey but like anything else people don't always buy the right things and the people selling aren't going to steer them in the right direction. Crossfit has received enough attention that people with no business running or training at a Crossfit box do so.

My main point was that calling kipping pull ups cheating pull ups makes it sound like they have no legitimate place anywhere which just ain't so. I would not recommend Crossfit for OP.

LOL! Some of these posts are just funny.. Im a CrossFit certified trainer and CrossFit affiliate owner. And all im going to tell you is #1 dont touch a cable machine. Nor just lift dumbells. Bodybuilders use dumbells to strictly build up that muscle that they are isolating. Getting huge biceps and pecs do not improve your cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, or functional strength. If you want to live a long healthy life you need to do some type of cross training. Go find a personal trainer in a cross training field that can show you how to do functional movements like air squats push ups pull ups. At the age of 50 you arent really worrying about having the biggest biceps in your senior highschool class. Its about living a healthy lifestyle so you can get outside and enjoy life to the fullest. Learn how to do some hip/shoulder mobility. As you age you lose mobility in your hips which is why we eventually dont walk like we should as we age. You can get more flexible and work on mobility at any age. But no hulk hogan bodybuilder guy wont know what the hell "hip mobility" means at a 24 hour fitness club. Ive been teaching a 55 year old man at my gym everyday at lunch time and he is kicking ass. Losing fat, getting stronger at functional movements ( everyday movements you use in life). He is jumping on 20 inch boxes because I have his hips functioning again. When I start seeing the effects of ageing, I am going to focus on functional movements and mobility. That way when im 60 I can still move. These bodybuilders make me sick. This isnt the 80s anymore and we arent on venice beach. Stop eating processed starches and sugars. Eat lean meats vegetable fruits nuts and seeds. Take 3-5 grams of a HIGH quality fish oil for heart health and to reduce silent inflammation. I have a herniated disc and this helps a ton. Purepharma is a good brand. Drink a lot of water. Eat healthy fats like avocados, nuts, and coconuts. Buy a foam roller and learn how to use it. Do shorter HIGH intensity workouts. Make that heart rate get high. Dont jog for 3 hours at a 90 bpm heart rate. Your wasting your time. Example of a workout that will get your heat pumping in 8 minutes.

500m row
40 air squats
30 sit ups
20 push ups
10 pull ups. (if you cant do pull-ups use bands if you dont have bands then do standing ring rows with rings or a suspension cable system like TRX )

This is a CrossFit workout called Baseline, for first day crossfitters. Do all of that as fast as you can!!! Have fun and start learning some CrossFIt methods/ cross training methods and get a trainer!!!!!

Rant over,

Max

Almost 50 years old, lifted for some years from my 20s into my 30s. I have various injuries from lifting over the years, and they are due to my own mistakes. Not enough warmup, not recognizing "failure" correctly, and sacrificing form to get those last couple reps..... like I said, my own mistakes.

Started crossfit a couple months back. I am also a fan in running in the various mud runs, and want to keep my body in good enough shape so I can keep up with my two teenage boys in life's various endeavors.

My crossfit coach is a good one. Recognizes that there are some exercises that I shouldn't do quite yet, and has me do a "progression" type exercise until I am physically prepared. She is aware of my lower back disc issues, and has absolutely no problem singling me out in class to custom make my workout for the day so that it is safe.

Why CrossFit is better for me than lifting.... 1. The workout is guided, so I get all the way through it. If I'm lifting and just don't have the motivation, I'll bag some of the lifts. Not so in CrossFit, you get the whole workout completed. 2. The warmup is never skipped, it is done with exercises that prep your muscles for the coming workout, and gets you properly heated up. 3. It's different every time, and I don't know what the workout is going to be until I get there (I enjoy that aspect). 4. I don't see a problem with fit women in yoga pants and athletic wear, and actually think the world needs more.

Try CrossFit. Most groups will give you the first workout for free to see if it's for you. If you find it isn't what you were after, then don't join. But I think you'd do yourself a disservice if you didn't at least explore it as a possibility.

Well said Velitrius. I just taught a 55 year old man. A good cross fit trainer knows how to scale down the workouts for anybody.

I've never done anything but free weights in my 20's at one point I was 426lbs with 27inch biceps.
Never had training of anykind other then muscle magazines' I did a lot of damage to my back and shoulders.
So I quit for over 20 years started back last year being older and a bit wiser. Only up 50lb dumbbells and pushups plus an ecliptical machine. But went from 14 inch to just under 19 inch biceps so doing alright.
