Anybody here with a chronic medical condition?

I feel like a wimp even posting after reading some of these real problems, even life threatening ones. I have chronic foot problems. I have arthritis in them. I've broken both of them and get tendonitis all the time. I spent 6 weeks in a wheelchair a couple of years ago because both of them were broken at the same time. [ ... ] My rheumatologist and my podiatrist don't pinpoint anything specifically as causing all the problems, although I do have metatarsus adductus which is just a fancy way of saying my feet aren't shaped quite right.

Have you considered orthotics? (Braces)

Have you considered orthotics? (Braces)

Yes. I've had them for a couple of years. Pretty neat process. I put my foot in what looked like a light box and was lasered and the results were downloaded and emailed directly to the company. I never felt much of a real difference, though.

My new Podiatrist has now had me take them out to see if there is any difference.

I have 2 rare blood diseases. 1 is rare and is in remission, the other is really rare (I have heard 200 people in the country) and requires me to get a medicine infusion every 2 weeks (that costs my insurance $20K a pop).

Because of them I have low blood counts. Low red counts means you can't carry as much oxygen so I get winded if I start moving a lot. Low white cells mean I don't have a very good immune system and any infection has to be taken very seriously and usually means heavy duty antibiotics or a stay at the hospital for a week. Low platelets mean if I am injured I don't stop bleeding very well.

When I first found out about it I researched all the options and choose a high dose chemotherapy where I was in the hospital for over a month (I think 37 days). It didn't work quite like it was advertised and came back a couple years later. I got another treatment I guess 3 years ago this month and it seems to be working OK as of now. I still have all those symptoms above but I am alive which means it is working for the time being.

I am not able to work right now and the disease will most likely cut my time here short. Knowing that really changes your priorities and what is important. Don't ever take a day that you wake up in the morning for granted because one day you aren't going to. I am turning 31 this year and have been dealing with this for 7 years and I still have a hard time with that. But it is something that every single person will have to face one day and is the only thing you are guaranteed in life.

Good luck with your condition and continue to try to find an alternative treatment. The more you use your inhalers the less effect they will have and it will cause you to rely on them more.

God bless you brother!

I used to have a godawful whine in my right ear, practically blocked out my hearing on that side. I also get infected sinuses and my doctor prescribed an antibiotic that took care of the infection, but didn't completely clear the sinuses.

He suggested I pinch my mouth and nostrils shut, and then push air up into them. The pressure popped my eardrums back in place, so to speak. He told me to do this twice a day for a while. It worked. Tinnitus gone. (Still half-deaf from years of NYC subways. :))

my godawful whine is (they think) due to the stretching/damaging of the auditory nerves. It's some sort of homeostatic response. I can still hear fine (I can even still mix sound) there's just this damn noise. no matter how loud the environment around me is, I can still hear it. at the same time, I can still hear the flies buzzing on the windows over the noise. It's weird.

the best part is, everybody else thinks you're crazy.

Chronic medical condition. Check!

Multiplied. Check!

Whilst I breathe, I fight.

I win too!

Not always, nor for as long, or as frequently as I'd like.

But I win!

And that my friends, is the point!

Whatever conditions assail us, we have drive.

And hope!

It works for me!

I have no idea if it is a FDA approved drug or what it is exactly but I have recently heard of something called Quietus. It is supposed to be some sort of treatment for tinnitus. Probably worth looking into if you haven't heard of it.

Edit: Here is the website link -----------

Edit 2: I took down the website link because what I found seems to indicate it is a ripoff company that signs you up for additional products and charge you more than they should and are basically a scamming snake oil salesman company. Too bad because my dad could use it. Years on an aircraft carrier, shooting guns, and race cars aren't good for ears.

My chronic medical condition...Where should I start?

high blood pressure...About 190/110 without meds!
(at-least one) "bad" heart-valve.
Emphysema..I get VERY short-of-breath easily.
bad lower back...L3, L4 are totally messed up.
gout

Those are just the "main" problems...:(.

Emphysema, I watch my 53 year old neighbor deal with his and its sad. I can't think of much more worse than Emphhysema!!!

An auto immune infestation. About 10 years ago I became lethargic, had tremendous abdominal pain and constant diarrhea. I tried my best to fight through the symptoms and really thought it would go away. I became so sick and dehydrated that they had a real problem finding a vein in order to hook up an I.V.. I finally had to go to the hospital and was admitted immediately. Over the course of the next 10 days, I found out that I had Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis,Ilyitus and acid reflux. If I had waited much longer to go to the hospital I may have died. The attending G.I. Dr. said my digestive tract looked like raw hamburger. Prior to that, I could literally run up mountains, bench press 400lbs and was the fittest person that I knew.Of course now things have changed. Some days I feel so bad all I can do is lay on the couch. On a good day I am never without pain as the disease has attacked my joints. To look at me you would never know it. I fight threw a lot of pain and because of that I may appear fit and strong. However, Inside I wonder how long I can continue the fight. The disease has led to poly arthritis that makes any kind of movement possible. I am not whining about it. I attack it every day. It is a constant battle that leaves me both a winner and a loser. I really hate to loose.

Does insomnia count? I've had it since 1998. Without medication I'll stay awake for a several days, crash and sleep for a few hours, then repeat the process. I've tried all sorts of things, modifying my diet, exercise times, different types of therapy, breathing technique, aroma and audio therapy, ear plugs, a plethora of meds, etc. Nothing works.

With medication, I can sleep 4-6 hours 5-6 days a week. There's still usually 1 day that I'm awake the entire time.

It's been so long, I don't even remember what it was like to be fully rested every day. I function pretty well, I think; it's mainly due to will power. I'm not going to let this crap rule my life.

I had that, before I dumped her. The new one doesn't make noises like that. Matter of fact, I'm about ready to propose.

I've got a displaced pelvis, my back is screwed up, ankles, knees, plantar fasciitis. Have torn muscles in shoulder and back, but those healed, and never trouble me. Had a rough week with the pelvis being out of place for awhile without giving any warning signs, and after the soreness from being put back in and muscle spasms went down, realized my knee was still killing me. Been bothering me for years, but lots of hiking and training lately have really fired it up.
Called off work tonight, and going in the morning to confirm my self-exam(by probing while referring to an anatomical chart), and maybe get referred to a surgeon for a torn ACL.
Man, this thread needs to be in W&C!
Haven't let any of that stuff stop me, but it sure is starting to slow me down. Worst part is I'll be 39 in a month:foot:

I am dealing with a 2 year old case of tennis elbow in my dominate arm, actually off work right now because of it. If this round of rest and physio doesn't fix it or get it under control it looks like surgery is the last ditch attempt to fix it. Thing is surgery for tennis elbow is less them 50% successful according to the doctor. At the moment my elbow is so messed up I can't bend it on its own, I have to use my right hand to do it. And then there is the messed up left shoulder that needs surgery to get it moving freely to again.
Shoulder I can deal with its a result of my own stupidity, the elbow is the result of over working it, and no I have never played a single game of tennis

Hypnosis and biofeedback have helped with the autoimmune stuff. but if anybody knows how to get rid of this godawful whine in my ears, I'd name my firstborn child after them.

Nimick, look into Cranial Sacral Therapy. If you have questions just shoot me a pm.

For about 5 years I have had chronic pain in my left arm. From the shoulder down through the elbow. I did the original injury at work, and was sent to a lot of very good specialists. The final diagnosis is radial nerve damage. They can operate, but there is about a 75% chance it will do nothing to remedy the problem and more than likely, it would make it worse.
6 Vicodin a day is enough to keep the edge of the pain off, but it never gets rid of all of it.

Then there are very severe chronic migraines. I have an extremely high pain threshold, but there are days that it kicks my ass. It helps having the injections that I can take with me, and the anti nausea pills

Neurologist said some of the problem may stem from two very serious blows to my head about 20 years ago. They told me in the e.r that it should have killed me

I've got something dissolving my bones and joints. My shoulders had the clavicle bones deteriorate into what looked like broken number two pencils at the end. This really tore up my rotator cuffs. two surgeries on each, and the shoulders will never be the same. I used to be a weight lifter, and MA as well as worked jobs that put strains and injuries on everything.

I now need one hip replacement, one ankle rebuild, both knees scoped, neck, and back surgeries.

My last orthepedic doctor on the first visit looked at my medical records and asked if I was an ex NFL player. Apparently some of those guys just wear out their joints in their careers to the point where their bodies are wrecked.

I'm kind of in that situation even though I didn't play any professional sports. Just labor jobs, military, law enforcement, correctional officer ( 15 years) and security( second job for same 15 years)

Conditions, both knees shot (hereditary condition), COPD, high blood pressure. Other than that not bad. Wife has RA, which is worse than anything I have. Good news is company insurance is great.

I battled tinitus for a while. Nothing was working at all, but then I realized I shoulda been looking to God first anyway, so I asked for the tinnitius to be taken away, and the next morning, it was gone! Anyway, I got the tinnitus cuz I'm in my school's drumline, center snare baby, anyway, I was a doofus and didn't wear ear protection all the time. We play on Yamaha 14 SFZ's, the most explosive rimshot ever.

I'm pushing to replace them with some Pearl Carbonply carbonfiber drums, look cool and sound great, they have a more resonant push while maintaining crispness.

There's no medicine for what ails me: I'm middle-aged, short, hairy, overweight, and beneath all the hair I'm probably ugly too (no one really knows, just a suspicion).

Talk about chronic... :D

Jeeze though, are you guys all like a hundred years old or what?!?

:p

Yeah, I recently got diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis, and a pinched nerve in my neck.
I also have a hypothyroid.

Last June I devolved a DVT, (blood clot), in my right leg and spent four days in the hospital...

After I got out the doctors discovered I had APS...AntiPhospholipidAnitbodySydrome....an auto-immune disorder that causes your antibodies to attack your phospholipids and cause blood clots and other issues...

So now, at the young age of 53...I'm on warfarin, (blood thinners), for the rest of my life...I go for blood draws every month at the hospital to maintain my warfarin levels...
