I'm interested in buying darts and a board, but I don't know what qualities to look for. What brands are good? What qualities make up a good dart board and set of darts? Can I get a decent set for 50 bucks or so?

God. I haven't played darts in years. Still have about 10 sets in my drawer somewhere.

Either case. Won't answer about which brand of darts to buy, because it comes down to personal preference. What I can tell you is to stop in a good dart supply place and ask them to test the darts. Reputable places will let you throw the store samples. And get them in different weights to find the pne that feels right. Shape affects feel as well. I prefer heavy short stubby darts (23grams), but for the standard length one, I like them a little lighter (21 grams). The ones with the impact heads work. Tunsten is still my preferred shaft material. Buy a dart adjustment tool, it'll come in handy. As well as a sharpener. And if you don't like to replace flights (which you will no matter how careful you are) frequently, get one of those carrying cases that lets you store the darts with the flights on. Saves flights, as well as time.

For dart boards, go ONLY with a bristle broad. They last the longest. And taper rings if possible. It'll cut down on bounce outs. A piece of decent pine board works great as a back board.

You can get a decent bristle board and decent darts for around $50 (OK maybe a little more). But if you're not careful, you can easily spend $50 on just a set of darts.... ;)

The dart board that I use and recommend for casual and competitive play is a Winmau Blade II. I get far fewer bounce outs with the tapered ring design. Excellent, excellent board.

Darts.......so many to chose from but I can recommend Harrow Power Points. I play with 23 gram weight darts and I they are the best that I have played with to date. Even better than my Hammerheads.

The only thing I can add is...
You can cover that piece of plywood with a chunk of carpet (scraps from the rug store or just cut a piece out from under the couch...it'll match)
The carpet won't hurt the darts and SWMBO won't complain about the ugly wood.
Just don't let her look under the couch ;)
Oh yeah, I still have my 28 gram cannonshells

Get a good bristle board as others mentioned, darts are a personal thing, I suggest you get some simple brass darts with aluminum shafts first around 24 gram and later decide on which better ones you want, the brass ones can be kept as loaners for people who just want to throw around but not know much.

Thanks for the info and suggestions guys. Walmart's website says they have the Winmau blade II board, so I think I'll go up there today and check that out.
