Anybody know what happened to Photopoint? Have they gone belly up?

FWIW, I just called my credit card company and was informed that I can still contest the PhotoPoint charge even though I've already paid the credit card bill on which it appeared. After explaining the situation to the rep, I was advised to deduct the amount of the PP payment from my next credit card statement, and look for a letter in the mail. I sign the letter with an explanation of the reason for contesting the charge, send it back to the credit card company, they do battle with PhotoPoint, and I'm not out any money. Of course, I'm still hosed as far as the 250+ pics I had there (some of which were deleted from my HD) and all the links on various forums. Still, it was worth a call to an 800 number to get some partial relief.

Berk,

I did the same early yesterday morning.

They didn't even blink when I told 'em what the sitrep was.

Just said they'd credit the amount.

Glad I saved most of my pix on my hard drive. It made getting set up with another site less painful.

Looks like I've got a call to the credit card company to make.

At least Zing gave its members the chance to save their pix and even helped to get them over to Ofoto. Photopoint lacked that integrity which is very bothersome to me -- and I'm sure others besides just Berk and me.

And, now that I'm a Gold Member of BF, I can (theoretically) post here from my hard drive - so here goes an experiment:

Well, that didn't work, and I can't delete this post, and I can't add the pic again.:barf:

Guess I'll go read the FAQ.

Bill, as a moderator you already have all the exalted privileges of gold membership. All you have to do to upload a pic is look under the box you're typing your text into -- you'll see a line that begins:

Attach file:
Maximum size: 102400 bytes

Farther along that line you'll see a button that says "Browse..." Click on that and you'll find yourself browsing your hard drive for the pic you want to upload -- starting at your desktop, so the easy way is to put a shortcut to the folder you keep your pix in on your desktop. When you find the file double-click it and you're all set.

Apparently you can put more than one pic in a post if you edit it after posting to add the additional pix. I haven't tried that yet. It might be more convenient to make a new post for each pic anyway.

I'll attach a pic to this just to prove I know what I'm talking about. Besides, it's information that might come in handy someday ... you never know when you might come across a lizard in need of resuscitation....

Thanks for usual good help, Cougar. Since I am the Hermit of the HI forum almost never getting anyplace else I don't learn much about what's going on in the outside world.

I think I got those lizard resuscitation instructions from this forum, though I don't remember who originally posted them. Maybe he'll show up and claim credit ... or ... um ... maybe not....

Another kewl trick -- you can change your title now! If you're tired of being Bill Martino, Moderator, you can change your title to ... oh ... how about

Bill Martino
Spreader of HIKV

or ...

Bill Martino
Cantina Proprietor

Bill Martino
Fanatical Cult Leader

Bill Martino
Uncle

The change is retroactive; your title will change on all the posts you've ever made. If you change it back later, they'll all change back.

Any premium or gold member can change his title.

Maybe we should have a contest to help Bill choose a new title for himself.

And anybody, even basic members, can have an avatar -- like that cougar pic next to my name, or whatever you want (if you can find or shoot or draw a picture of it). Details at http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=159338

How about a contest to find a good avatar for Bill? Edit your khukuri pix to 50x50 pixels or less and <10k.

If Bill will go along with the contest ideas, I am willing to offer a prize -- a free resuscitation demonstration for the winners (if the winners are willing to come to Remulak for it).

An avatar for Uncle Yoda Martino?

"Hmmmmmm, sell you a khukuri I will...YEESSS"

Bill,

You beat me to the post with the Yoda photos :D I read Cougar's post and was about to hit the search button...

Alan

I figured you wouldn't want to mess around searching for pix and editing them, Bill -- but if those of us who enjoy that kind of thing do it and we post something you like, you can make it your avatar very easily -- just right-click on the pic and save it to your desktop, then go to your User Control Panel (that "User CP" button) and you can upload it. It's easy, and if you change your mind you can get rid of it even easier.

It also occurs to me if we post a bunch of khukuri or related pix small enough for avatars, other people besides Bill are likely to find something they like.

The main problem is finding a pic that looks good in that small a format. For instance I bet those Waterhouse paintings I posted in the Phantom of the Khukura thread wouldn't be visible at all that small; they'd just be a blur.

First find a pic that looks simple enough to work as a thumbnail -- then crop it as much as possible; no sense in wasting space on background -- then shrink it to 50x50 pixels and see how it looks. It also has to be less than 10k but that doesn't seem to be as much of a problem.

PhotoPoint is back online:
View

though I hope they'll let the rest of us know the next time they decide to give the hamster a rest:rolleyes:

This after spending the weekend updating my shopping site with pix I put on my Nevada Bell space! Well, I AIN'T gonna go back to Photopoint.
