Anybody Live trap?????

I eat raccoons and they are very good, one of my favorite game animals as a matter of fact.

I would not eat a possum unless I was starving. :barf::barf: I do not eat carrion eaters. Chris

Have some coon in the freezer as we speak. The opossum is a surprisingly disease resistant animal. All fat and strange smells. Possum is one of those animals that has a smell so unique, once you get 'er opened up, that you can ID it by odor alone (like boar). Clean and dress a opossum, and everyone "in the know" that you shake hands with for a day or so will know what you've been up to. :D

I regularly do.
I've got eleven squirrels this year.

great job buddy!!!!!!

Yes I do, but I need to get a new, large trap. The raccoon I got last time destroyed my trap. We have a family of them living in an abandoned treehouse on adjoining property, and they are much too curious when my little ones are out playing. I was hoping the coyotes would take them out this Winter, but it's up to me now.

I worked in pest control here in BC until I quit a few months ago and BY LAW I had to humanely live trap and relocate all skunks, possums, raccoons and squirrels!!!!
And all most guys do is drive them to greenspaces and the river, it is a perpetual cash machine.
Used to kill guys in the industry with my slogan after work drinking......

"I'll take your squirrel for a drive for 195$"

and people paid it

Love your trap Fujita, I laughed for 10 sec. when I saw the hello ratty sign on top.

I use the havaharts all the time, great traps. In the city if you want to avoid catching local cats when trapping coons/skunks/possums put a cracked egg(break the yoke, the fat releases scent and a whole one in a small plastic dish, they are all nest raiders and zero in on them quick Cats don't mess with eggs but try any fishbait/cat food and look out.

Sending paperwork to start my own pest control in to the government as soon as I can afford the fee's.

(off topic)Don't ever work for a South African manager if you can help it,
pre-apartheid management style's are outdated and annoying to say the least.
(end rant)

trapping is fun

Any tips on live trapping a skunk with a havahart?

Joe where are you seeing them on your yard? is there an onsite den? give me some details and I will help you out. Eggs as in my other post and if there are no cats sardines in oil is the best I have used for them.

One very valuable tip I can tell you is to put the trap on the middle of a small cheap tarp or plastic. Tie 2 strings to the front/back corners and drape them over the trap and 20 feet to the other side.
WHY?

Well think of a skunk angry in an open trap while you "try" to drape a blanket/tarp over him and pick it up. Prepare for multiple showers!!!!!!

With this you walk calmly to the strings without getting close first or making noise. Pull the strings/tarp over the trap. Now you can get close and wrap the trap up for live release or the dunking tank.
When they are wrapped up before they spray, they don't want to other than little puffs if your rough with them.
Don't expect to reuse the tarp.......

If you can shoot them make sure you shoot them right behind the head in the neck or behind the shoulders high on the spine. If you sever the cord they won't spray, they still go off with head shots sometimes.

They make dedicated skunk traps that have all polyproplene solid bodies and a solid steel door. One small hole in the back for ventilation. They don't spray often in the plastic coffin. Only thing that sucks with them is I had to eyeball through the hole with a flashlight to see if it is a cat.

Drove someones cat to the boonies once thinking it was a skunk, when I opened the door and started to run I saw orange and luckily was able to grab the little cat and toss him back in, 4 good scratches and a bite to the coat. Would have felt bad feeding the poor thing to the coyotes by the river.
send me a pm or we can go back and forth here. I am sure others could use the info.

Long as you keep putting food in the trap they will keep getting in it, I had a few coons that I could almost call up to feed. I lived in a run down cabin in Fontana NC and had a skunk that would bang the screen door for me to feed him, when I opened it he would go to his bowl and wait on me. Before anyone says anything, yes, I know the dangers of feeding wildlife. Chris

I'm afraid what would happen if he wasn't fed. LOL.

Put the back of the trap in a black garbage bag all except the front door. After catching, approach quietly from behind and slip the bag quickly over front and tie. Being in the dark keeps them calm. Let them go the same way or slip a hose from your car exhaust into the slightly open bag end.--KV
