Anybody prefer the Umnumzaan over the Large Sebenza 21?

I want to buy a Large Sebenza 21 Left-Handed but my dealer is out of stock.

Should i wait or pull the trigger on an Umnumzaan left-handed?

I know i should wait for the one i really want but who know maybe the Umnumzaan would be as cool to use.

Thanks!

I concur with what "you know" :) -- that is to get what you want. Having said that, a lefty Sebenza is not hard to find. Most of the major CRK dealers have them in stock.

Get what you want, but for me that would be the Umnum. Like it more than the Seb.

Umnumzaan...it's not your daddy's Sebenza :)

I have been impressed with the performance of my Large Sebenza. In fact, my Ubajane is perfect as well. The sebenza locks up in the same place every time. Zero blade play, even after almost a decade.

When a knife can do that, it's worth every penny. I carried the Sebenza on duty for 6 months straight, no rotation. It stays sharp forever, never chips. It is a beautiful knife. I stopped carrying it because I was scratching the handle. It has nothing to do with the price. It's more related to ruining a piece of art work.

I have both and have EDC'ed both as well. I tend to grab my Umnumzaan much more these days because it fits my hand better.

I prefer the Umnumzaan over the 21, I prefer the Reuglar over the 21 too, so it's probably
no surprise to hear that I'm not a big fan of the "classic" shape Sebenzas. :)

My umnum is great but when i handle a large sebenza i like it more. it's intangibles for me, i guess. :)

I believe that the Umnumzaan has some serious improvements over the Sebenza. I'm very happy with mine.

Of course, that's not going to stop me from picking up a Sebenza in the future. :) I like them both.

Well I hate to say it.....but my Tanto Zaan getting more carry time then my Lg Classic Sebbie. Just to be clear on what that means....I chose my Sebenza over a Scott Cook Lochsa. Ended up selling the Locsha and keeping my Sebenza, and now the Sebenza sits while my Tanto Zaan rides around in my pocket almost daily.

Yeah....I do dig em both. It's good having both.

I think the Umnumzaan is perhaps one of the most refined knives (to MY taste). That said there is a lot of personal taste when it comes to knife choice.

Why I like the Umnumzaan over the Sebenza:

I like the false edge for scraping.

I like the texture on the handles.

I LOVE the lock engagement (not only is it very quiet, but I find it smoother than the conventional ball detent/hardened lock face...I think the idea of a ball serving both duties is fantastic).

I like that the front slab has no cutout for lockbar access. Some dislike this, others will see the benefit of obscuring the unlock mechanism (count me in the second group).

I like the idea of a larger pivot and the studs doubling as a blade stop....though I do not recall ever seeing a Sebenza failure in this area.

These are my thoughts. As I said, preference is just that and certainly will vary with individual user. It sounds like you already decided to hold out for what you already know that you like. I would still urge you to fondle the Umnumzaan a bit if you have the opportunity and have not already "played" with one.

I am not a fan of the 21 sebenza and prefer the regular sebenza hands down. I love my large regular sebenza. Ever since I got my umnumzaan, the large regular sebenza has been sitting in the safe. You know it would have to be a hell of a knife to knock my sebenza from my pocket. It just so happens another CRK knife has done so. I use the zaan for everything and have NO Complaints. A new large regular sebbie is $385. The Umnumzaan is $400. In my opinion, you get a hell of alot more knife for the extra $15 dollars. Buy the zaan, you will be glad you did. Several ebay dealers sell the zaan and toolkit together.

I might be the only one here, but I prefer the Regular Sebenza.
I think it feels nicer in hand. The Umnumzaan is a sweet knife, VERY sharp, and easy to open; However, the feel in hand was too rough on the edges for my taste. If the handle was smoothed out a bit around the edges on and near the lockbar, maybe I would have kept mine.

I'm not a fan of the Classic shape either, preferring the Regular. Being that it's discontinued, I've decided to go to a tanto Umnum and it's growing on me. I carried the Sm. Seb for about 4 years, so the Umnum is taking some time to get used to, but it appears every bit as capable. I'd roll the dice, get the Umnum and see how it fits.

I like that the front slab has no cutout for lockbar access. Some dislike this, others will see the benefit of obscuring the unlock mechanism (count me in the second group).

I like everything on the Umnumzaan BUT that. It certainly does a number on my thumb when I close it one handed.

How do you guys close your Zaan one handed? Any hints to avoid having calloused thumbs?

I totally love the umnumzaan, but I find that I can't have the same knife in my pocket for long.
I carried the umnumzaan for quite some time and pick it up every now and then. I just recently carried a spyderco persistence for 10 days on a hiking trip. Got over that one but fun to try it out.

That said, these days I carry either a small hinderer xm-18, a small sebenza or the umnumzaan.

I'm a lefty and have used/carried both of those.

I'd say that I prefer the Sebenza 21 to the Umnumzaan as an EDC, but I really do like both.

FWIW, I'd chose my Umnumzaan over every other pocketknife I own that isn't a Sebenza.
