Anybody prefer the Umnumzaan?

It's all a matter of opinion, the Umnumzaan is arguably the better knife as far as toughness
goes but between the two I personally would take the 21 for it's simplicity and ease of maintenance, both are great it's your call.

I like everything on the Umnumzaan BUT that. It certainly does a number on my thumb when I close it one handed.

How do you guys close your Zaan one handed? Any hints to avoid having calloused thumbs?

Different strokes...different folks I guess. We are all different and that is perhaps why there are so many options on the market.

If you want a serious answer to how *I* close it one handed, watch this video of me handling an Umnumzaan for the first time in my life. It takes a while for me to open the box so feel free to start watching at 1:25. I guess this just illustrates how intuitive it is for me, but there is little reason to assume that everyone should feel the same.

I have to compliment the design and its dead fit to my personal taste. It may be a boring video, but it illustrates how intuitive the knife is for me...I am not knife juggler, but it is obvious how comfortable I am with this design (after just a few seconds following my introduction to it)!

I will admit here that my hands are a little bit on the soft side. I use the same movement as you to close my Umnumzaan one handed and it hurts my thumb a little more than my manliness would like to admit.:(

Ehh, sorry to hear that. I would not question your manliness though...perhaps you have one of those nice jobs that allows you to keep soft hands (which is something to be admired). In that regard, perhaps you are not working with your knives such that you need or want a partially obscured lock disengage?

If you otherwise love the Umnumzaan, perhaps you should modify it, or have it modified to your liking? I do not work on other people's stuff, but there are many talented people that will...

Hope I did not cross any lines here?

Yes, it's a white collar job. And whenever I have to do some manual work I always try to wear gloves.

No likes crossed. I have no problem closing my Umnumzaan with both hands.

Go for it. The Umnunzaan will become a classic knife. I love it. I place an order for a brand new Seb a while back. And I have been told its on back order. My appetite for it has receded since I got the 'zaan.
