Odd question perhaps...and I'm speaking more to recreation than occupation. Since I'd not think twice about what's in my pockets if need be to help another in a wet environment.

But it's summertime and the pool's open so I'm curious....anyone swim with an XM clipped to their bathing suit? Or any knife for that matter.

It's not that odd of a question when you think about all the times a knife comes in handy around the pool, perhaps not in it...opening packages, etc. and so on.

Funny you should ask this now, only yesterday I was contemplating taking one into the spa for some "different" photos.

The Ti elements of the XM are fine to get wet, the stainless parts however will rust.
I've see rust on the screw threads of a brand new XM, I guess the humid climate of the guy who sold it to me had something to do with it.

As a rule I won't intensionally submerge my XMs as I'm too lazy to strip clean them.

I use a spyderco dragonfly 2 H1 for the beach, kayaking, boating et

Ha, I was swimming with an older Spyderco all stainless up until recently..and yes SS blades do develop rust spots, but the SS handles are rust free (at least on the visible areas. Anyway, that knife has broken tip and chipped serrations so I'm considering my options. Swam today with a Benchmade...just feel abit is missing without an XM in my "pocket".

I enjoy flyfishing and always take my XM18...it sees plenty of dunk time but I always bring it home and clean it up. Never a problem...

Pools in the backyard. It's chemical balanced additionally chlorinated tap water (not salt like some pools)...so I'm in it often due to its convenience. The knife does not/would not get broken down and thoroughly cleaned/lubricated after each dunk.

My question is more to should I even bother since lubricants are likely to wash away and such? IDK? My XMs are users, but I don't want to "abuse" them.

So, does anyone swim with them?

Maybe I'll just do it and report back at the end of summer.

I don't think you'll have to worry between Teflon and Ti...the place I would be concerned with rust/pitting would be between the Scale and Ti...unless your carrying all Ti, then I wouldn't worry as much...you could just sling most moisture off, etc.

I think I'll start w/ my 3" Slicer since it's small, light and mostly Ti...I'm thinking sling it, lay it out to dry and once a week tear down, etc. Plus the SW and Blue combo looks pool ready anyway in a way.

I'm sorry but I have to ask. What's the purpose of swing with a knife? Especially in a pool?? I could see maybe if you were out in the bush and such. I guess my love for my xm24 isn't as strong is as your xm's lol!!

Ask away...this is a discussion forum. If we all see everything the same way life would be hella boring.

Knife while swimming because whenever I'm without one inevitably I find a need. Recently prying the strap of a pair of swim goggles from its buckle. Band's too flexible, small and confined for slippery hands and difficult to loosen with teeth...knife tip worked fine. Pool / dive toys come with packaging or are zip tied in one way or another. Hop out the pool and need to clear tree debris from around pool pump/filter/heater/etc. Encourage a spider out of his hiding place, open food packaging for the grill/cookout last weekend...I can go on...

And I did mention earlier that the knife in the pool is less likely needed than one around the pool, but for convenience and security I don't leave my knives tossed about willy nilly.

i lifequarded for a few years a while back. i usually had a spyderco h1 in my waist. most use it saw was cutting of wrist bands, and cutting snagged fishing line

Ok that's makes sense lol, not nessisarily in the pool more around it. If your comfortable with it use away!!! I havnt gotten to that level of confidence for using mine yet. I bet once I get my hands on another xm I won't feel so reclusive about using my xm.

Luckily you had what you needed on hand when need arose.

I don't know exactly what to say that won't take this thread off topic. I use my knives, not all have been used, but they are tools designed for use, so...

Did a bit of reading on Frog lube and it's got mixed reviews for several applications. IDK...I'm still thinking this all through.

I'm likely to leave the XMs in my change of dry clothing and swim with a knife I care far less about. I've thrown away knives a lot of folks EDC, so it's no big deal.

Maybe I'll swim with XMs, maybe I won't...will just see how mood and such play out this summer.

Thanks to all for posting with thoughts and ideas.

The chlorine in the pool water is the thing that will start the corrosion process. Chlorine naturally occurs in the ocean because of the salt content and solar energy. Liquid chlorine for pools is made out of salt water. Look on a gallon jug, it's labeled Sodium Chloride. It's made by passing salt water over a electrified element. Same with "Salt system pools" there is a electric element plumbed into the pool plumbing that uses a very small micro current to produce chlorine. In the Aircraft field they don't call any of the common stainless steels stainless-it's all referred to as CRS-Corrosion resistant steel. Not sure about the nitrogen steel, we don't use much of that (haven't seen any yet) on Aircraft.

After a few days to think it over I'm leaning towards my seldom used/unused "other brand" knives for this swim/around the pool task.

Still holds true I'd jump in a wet environment to "save" another with no concern, but that's an entirely different topic.

Spyderco salt line is made specifically for that kind of use

I've got a Benchmade for this, but it's a bit large.

I'm going to swim with an XM this weekend, stuff arrived recently to maintain her so I'll do a full dissasembly/cleaning/reassembly once swim is over.
