Does anybody here carry a Khukuri when hiking, camping, or just plain woods bumming? I have the CS machete which i use around the yard, etc. I love it but I find it binding sometimes when i'm chopping. I guess there is a technique I haven't mastered yet like finding the sweet spot. That just mean I need to get it out more. LOL
I was thinking about getting one from the HI sub forum here on BF. Does anybody have any recommendations?

I love my HI M-43. There is definitely a technique to using a khuk. Head on over to the HI subforum and start reading the various stickies. HI makes the best khuks in the world, and it's not even close.

Get a Bonecutter or an AK....they are great Khuk's IMO and I feel pretty much any Khukri fan should get an AngKhola (AK) they are classic Khukris and chope very well. So do the bonecutters.

I do not suggest getting anything much bigger than a 16 to 18 for general carry as they start to get pretty heavy on the belt. My 22 inch Durrui Churra is a heavy beast and cuts well but is just alot even strapped to a pack.

I have alot of HI's, not nearly as many as some other members floating around but I really like my 18 inch AK and I find with a different sheath they are much lighter and easier to carry. I tend to sand my handles to my liking or tape them as well.

what is the bottom blade and where do i get one? that thing is sweet !!! nice khuk also

These are Himalayan Imports.

1-Look the website and select a few models you like.
2- Wait for these to appear in a Deal of the Day (DOTD)
3- Buy one
4- Go back to step 1

Mine are a 18" Ganga Ram and a 15" BAS. Ang Khola or Chiruwa Ang Khola are other great options (I want a CAK!)

RR email answered :)

Rio nice khuk! That definitely looks like a user. Where did ya get it?

i recently got a HI kukri i havent used it to hard yet but i did do a little chopping so far it has worked great for a blade that is 1/2 thick

I have two nice, medium sized HI khukris I've "messed around" with ... I couldn't call myself a proper user.

I recently picked up a near-custom khukri, also medium sized, so I know I'm going to have to drop by the Cantina and actually learn how to use it properly.

Before I do myself an injury.:);)

I really like them for trail clearing. If you do a bit of stick & sword training and are used to swinging something for a couple hours, the HI sirupati is great for removing small to medium foliage.

The reason your cold steel one is binding is the grind. The HI's are ground-forged in a way that they really don't bind at all. I would advise you to buy a midsize one. I bought one of the huge 18'' AKs and it hardly sees use because it is just to big for actual use IMO.

I leave mine at the camp or in the car. I agree it's a little heavy to carry.

I have used an H.I. M-43 for several years extensively. Including several years of survival use. It is still a regular price of equipment when I go into the woods. I much prefer it to an axe.

None of the machete'e that are shaped like a kukri come anywhere close to it's performance in the field. Once one becomes proficient in it's use (which doesn't take long at all). You will never go back to anything else.

I use a Cold Steel bando model in Carbon V. Since I didnt like Cold Steel's kraton at all I had it rehandled by Lonerider grips. It now goes on all camping/survival type trips. I back it with a AG Russell neck knife. Great Combo.

I've been carrying a kukri as a primary survival knife for more than 10 years. My old CS LTC in Carbon V rides in a drop leg sheath and sees more use than any tool I own. It and a folder has been all the "blade" I've ever needed...That 12 inch recurve has brought me back from driving rain and freezing cold. I have bet my life on it and it has never let me down.
