anybody use clamps during temper?

I have a knife in the temper oven - got it clamped to a large, heavy, flat plate of mild steel. Normally, I would just sandwich it between two plates...but I can't find the other one. :mad:

Has anybody used clamps like this?

Any danger of toxic fumes? I assume it's case-hardened? Maybe not...

I always thought that was chrome plated so there would be no fumes .Have you had warping problrms ??
 
I will use a plate quench but I dont use clamps during tempering. IF the steel wants to move, I think It will move after the clamps are removed but I could be wrong;)
 
why are you clamping it for tempering? Doing stainless?
