Anybody use polyester casting resin to stabilize wood?

It's the stuff people use to make paperweights out of. Will this work with my vacuum setup?

I am sure anything solvent based will readily go into the pores, but unsure about the outcome, how long it will take for the resin to harden...

That stuff generally has a fast set up time so I wouldn't think it would have enough time to fully penetrate the wood. I'd go with a slower thin poly or epoxy. Check out www.uscomposites.com and I guarantee you'll find what you're looking for, along with a good explanation of what each one's pros and cons are...

How fast it sets up has is largely dependent on how much catalyst you add.
The reason I'm asking is, I already have two quarts. If the consensus is that it won't work, I can return it to the store.
Thanks for the link, keep that in mind.

The viscosity is too high on casting resin, and will not penetrate. You need something that has a long cure time, and is very thin. A low shrinkage laminating epoxy that has no wax release in it would be better
