Anyone a klutz like me? What's the most durable knife?

After lurking on this forum for quite some time, I've gained a healthy appreciation for Case peanuts…especially for their ease of carry. Unfortunately, they are so easy to carry that I occasionally forget they are in my pocket. Twice when I've tossed my pants into the laundry, the forgotten peanut's fallen on the tile bathroom floor. The first fall nudged a bolster a hair and cracked a scale. The second fall popped the name plate loose. Granted, a fall on a tile floor is extreme, but it got me wondering about the durability of the peanut and smaller 5th pocket knives in general.

So…what do you think is the most durable small pocket knife..brand and model?

My vote goes to a small Kershaw lock back folder I got in the 1990's. Not much bigger than a peanut, but with rubber scales!

If you like the Case Peanut why don't you get one with Delrin scales and Stainless Steel blades? It would stand up to being washed and dropped better than what you have now. OH

I can't speak for the peanut since I've never had one, but I've had several other Case knives with derlin scales and found them to be very durable. My sodbuster jr is several years old now and has been droped a few times onto hard surfaces with no ill effects.

My experiences as well.

Plus, a Sodbuster Jr. in yellow is just too cool.

For what you describe an Alox SAK will do well... :) May I suggest a Pioneer or Farmer?

Over the decades I've had knives go through the washer several times. I've found that stainless steel blades with Delrin covers is a pretty bombproof combination.

I've dropped my 8OT on tile and on rocks and haven't been able to spot any damage. I'd say a Schrade 12OT for a single blade peanut and a 72OT for double blade would be my suggestion. The 1095 blades aren't going to like going through the wash, but as long as they fall out of the hamper onto the tile they'll be fine.

Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong but I think the "Stagalon" that Schrade USA used in the Uncle Henry line of knives was Derlin. Blades were generally well done 440A. Nice combo.

This said, the Opinel had been the toughest knife I've owned. The sodbuster Jr. has a good reputation for toughness too.

Sodbuster jr. in Delrin. I am admittedly biased because I carry one. I carry one because they are durable and enjoy abuse. Sometimes mine just leaps from my hand or jumps off the top of my ladder - like it's trying to prove something.

STAGLON is delrin made to look like antler. dunno how they did it but i like a lot.

^^^ I second the yellow delrin Sodbuster Jr - it's my beater working knife for the true abuse I don't want my other babies to endure :)

Ditto for the Sod Buster (or equivalent patterns like Queen's CC) in Delrin/synthetic. I've dropped mine on concrete, watched them go skittering across it, and then found little or no damage at all. Any scuffs or scratches can be easily sanded or buffed out, but it's still only cosmetic damage at that; scuffs & scratches even look 'right' on a Delrin soddie.

My Boker 2525SGB has taken a few baths when I forget it in the pocket of my jeans and has had a few tumbles as well. The scales are still intact and other than a few spots on the blade, it's been a trooper. Obviously I clean it and reapply oil once discovering that it's been through the wash and have buffed the bolsters a time or two to take out the roughness, I imagine their pen knives would hold up as well. Other than that a Case with delrin scales would be my next choice, can't beat 'em!

I'll second the Queen #70 sodbuster pattern (with green linen micarta covers). Stainless liners and pins, oversized brass pivot bushing and an almost stainless D2 blade hold up well to wet and rough conditions. Mine's been tossed around, with no regard for its comfort, to no ill effect. Still looks almost like new.
Only my #7 Opinel has been through the washer (I blamed my wife for that). It came through its ordeal barely stained. After it dried out, a little Flitz had it shining like new, in no time at all.

Thread answered.

They got orange micarta coming too. :D

If you are looking to upsize the knife, a Sodbuster in Delrin and Stainless is about all the knife one could need..... maybe the Junior if the SB Sr. is too big.
