Anyone Actually Worry About Coyotes in the Woods?

The point is, coyotes are smart, and they know prey when they see it. For the most part, humans simply aren't prey, and they know it. But in the rare occasions where humans are vulnerable, it's possible for them to perceive them as prey. For the most part, they seem to see us and our children as hard targets, but in the rare occasion where a child is alone, or a coyote is diseased and/or crazy, attacks can happen.

Coyotes aren't much of a problem over here in Blighty. The thing I fear most of all is anyone seeing me with a knife and reporting me to the police: carrying a knife is an automatic crime. Of course if you've got a good reason for carrying the knife you're okay (so long as you can convince Mr Policeman that you do have a good reason - a lot of them say that there is never a good reason to carry a knife!).

Sorry, rant over.

Growing up in the Mojave desert, I saw hundreds of coyotes and they were always VERY afraid of me whether I was armed or not. Now, wild dogs or coy-dog mix are dangerous because they've lost their fear of humans.
Here in the pacific northwest coyotes are no problem, we do have to keep an eye on cougars though. WE humans keep taking away their wild territory and WE are much more dangerous.

Here in Central Ohio coyotes are becoming more and more common, but not much of a threat to an adult in any kind of shape. I've heard of a couple cats that may have been taken by yotes, but that is pretty much it.

My 230lbs Mastiff goes with me 99% of the time I go into the bush... I think he'd be good defense against those little pups.

I had never heard that, but I just checked it out and dang if you aren't right!

They can also carry rabies too. Which I had never even considered.

I had all along just figured it was a crazy armadillo. :D

It seems the much more probable explanation, after reading this stuff; was that it had rabies. That is most likely what caused it to act bizarre.

I'd have been screwed if it had scratched and/or bit me... I might have contracted the "double whammy". Rabies with a side order of Leprosy.
That would have been a "trip". :D:D:D

This link was kind interesting...... ;) ...

You would have ended up foaming at the mouth and then your junk would have fallen off! ;)

we shot as many coyotes as deer (three). they looked healthy. when i walked to my set up spot, a coyote got pushed out, and stared at me, walked 10 feet away, stared at me ( i was still with rifle loaded), he kept doing that. i thought it was pretty cool, kinda standoff like. good choice he backed off. The ones we did shoot had no mange at all, very healthy coats. Very few rabbit tracks too. Yes i do take a knife with me when walking my 3 yr old.(although a gun is usually not far away).

Any animal that will run like hell from a 60lb gsp is not a threat to me. Pretty sure I could kill a coyote bare handed. I am 6'2'' 240 but that's besides the point

Just bought a gwp to accompany us as well more in their breed to chase foxs and coyotes down and kill em she's 5 months 37lb gonna be a beast

I don't need to go into the woods -- we have Coyotes in the back yard! They come out to annoy the dogs in the kennel, I think. Other than that, they're of no particular concern.

I see them once in a while when hunting jack-rabbits, when they see me they are gone, I have never had a problem with any coyote..

Here in utah you can hunt them all year.....

The ones we have here are 60-80 lbs. They come in close and people don't bother to hunt them so much. The DEC is trying to get more people to do it and keep them more fearful of men. I'm actually thinking of hunting them at some point. Night calling sounds like fun.

You think they're just cute little furry woodland creatures until you watch one day as a pack of them pull down, and while it's still crying and bleating, feed on a white tailed deer. Never forget that in the woods you are not nessarily the top of the food chain. Feral dogs are an issue too no doubt. My brother has teeth marks in his .22 magnum to prove that. You never know what is in those woods.

I always carry. Sometimes it's a rifle, sometimes it is a pump shotgun. I don't go un armed.

coyotes don't bother me at all. I've come across them plenty of times at night, but only once in the daytime. Usually they scatter and run off, even when they're in packs. They like to make a bunch of noise, but they never came after me. I used to have a pack of them that followed a trail through my back yard when I lived in Memphis. I would hear them coming and I could open up the widow and see them running around in the yard. I don't know what they would find in my yard, but they always liked to hang around and bark and howl back there. I had to chase them away more times than I can count.

Now wild dogs, on the other hand, are vicious bastards. I've only had two run-ins with them and one ended with me blasting two of them in the face with shot as they ran at me. In my experience, wild dogs aren't afraid of a damn thing. I yelled and waved and everything else and they didn't care one bit. All they cared about was that I was made out of meat and I had apparently done something that greatly offended them.

The other time I saw a pack of wild dogs, I got a good look at a group of them. I was up in a shooting house and they didn't know I was there, so I got to watch them for a while. It was like a scene out of a cartoon or something. They were all different sizes. None of them looked like any breed I could easily recognize.

There are definitely stories of being people being attacked and killed by coyotes. However, I think more about being attacked by a buck than by coyotes when I am walking through the woods.

I fear cougars (mountain Lions)

Damn things are sneeky.....

Rocky mountains are crazy

They are pack animals, if they are in a group and have the advantage and the hunger, they will try to eat you.

Some of their handy work.

I'm not worried about coyotes in the woods. They usually won't disturb you if you don't disturb them. That said, USUALLY there is still a chance so bring the shotgun. Well that's me anyway.
