Hi, River, will be nice to have your Zaan come in tomorrow. I have a 21 coming in tomorrow also, so double-blessings. I prefer the slight "tactical" appearance of the Zaan with its swedge design and reinforced (thicker) tip, but agree that the Sebbie is likely to be a better "slicer."
At one-half inch from the tip, along the top of the blade, the Zaan is 0.085" whereas the Sebbie is 0.073".
In a closed comparison of length, the Unmumzaan is 4.770" long, which goes to 4.850" long when you include the extra length of the glass-breaker tang extension. The longest measurement of the blade extending from the handle is 3.600".
The Classic Sebbie has a closed length of 4.800".
The longest measurement of the blade extending from the handle is 3.582".
Comparing blade length, the ground sharp edge of the blade is 3.470" in BOTH of these knives.
The blade-thickness of the Zaan is 0.140"...thicker than the 0.125" of the Sebenza. It may be noted that the new "25 Sebenza" will have a blade thickness of 0.140"...like the Umnumzaan.
Here is my Zaan with my Classic Sebbie.
My Sebbie is opened and closed with less effort that the Umnumzaan. Please note that I have made NO adjustment of the pivot of these knives, although the Umnumzaan just got back from a Spa treatment. I can easily open/close the Sebbie with one hand. I can open the Umnumzaan with more effort, although it seems to be normal enough. However, I am UNABLE to press the detent with enough force to unlock and close the blade one-handed. I can move the detent, but far enough to unlock it. The lock is NOT sticky. I am older, but by no means weak, and my hands are at least normal strength.
The Zaan unlocks very easily when I hold the handle in my left hand and use my right forefinger-nail into the dent in the lock-blade.
I don't have a problem with this, as I don't need to close the knife until my use for it is finished. It remains a mystery to me, however, why Chris Reeve would design it this way...UNLESS he planned a two-handed closing. After all, the Sebenza closing and lock-bar design is so VERY different.
