If any of you toting a Large Sebenza(Regular,P,Classic, 21) and an Umnumzaan don't have anything going on and have an itch to show some pics could you post up some side by side comparison shots?

Would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

They're southpaw versions but hope it helps.

Interesting. I always thought the Umnum was much larger than the Seb but they look to be about the same...

They are pretty much the same size. Way different ergos, but size wise they're in the same category.

Anyone have any comments on ease of opening/closing comparison with the 21?
Having had my Zaan for only a matter of days, I'm impressed with its ease of opening/closing. I don't have large hands, but it's more technique than anything else.

I'll try to explain, please refer to the 1st pic in M240G's Post #6. Looking at the 21 in the pic, you would use your thumb to push the stud to the left in this direction <, just as you would with most folders. With the Zaan, you would use your thumb to push the stud up ^ as though you were trying to guide the stud into the recessed area of the scale where it will ultimately come to rest.

I'm not sure if I was able to describe this adequately, but when yours arrives you'll certainly be able to spend a little time with it; within no time, it'll be second nature. I've also noticed that it's easier for me to close 1 handed when I push the lockbar more towards the bottom of it, as opposed to pushing up higher where there's actually more surface to push on. But, that's not unique for me with the Zaan, as I've always had an easier time closing all frame-locks in that manner.

I got what your saying. Thanks!

I've never had any problem opening Sebenzas, not even my first go at one. Hopefully the Umnumzaan will prove just as easy for me and my well calloused thumb:thumbup::D

Hi, River, will be nice to have your Zaan come in tomorrow. I have a 21 coming in tomorrow also, so double-blessings. I prefer the slight "tactical" appearance of the Zaan with its swedge design and reinforced (thicker) tip, but agree that the Sebbie is likely to be a better "slicer."
At one-half inch from the tip, along the top of the blade, the Zaan is 0.085" whereas the Sebbie is 0.073".

In a closed comparison of length, the Unmumzaan is 4.770" long, which goes to 4.850" long when you include the extra length of the glass-breaker tang extension. The longest measurement of the blade extending from the handle is 3.600".

The Classic Sebbie has a closed length of 4.800".
The longest measurement of the blade extending from the handle is 3.582".

Comparing blade length, the ground sharp edge of the blade is 3.470" in BOTH of these knives.

The blade-thickness of the Zaan is 0.140"...thicker than the 0.125" of the Sebenza. It may be noted that the new "25 Sebenza" will have a blade thickness of 0.140"...like the Umnumzaan.

Here is my Zaan with my Classic Sebbie.
My Sebbie is opened and closed with less effort that the Umnumzaan. Please note that I have made NO adjustment of the pivot of these knives, although the Umnumzaan just got back from a Spa treatment. I can easily open/close the Sebbie with one hand. I can open the Umnumzaan with more effort, although it seems to be normal enough. However, I am UNABLE to press the detent with enough force to unlock and close the blade one-handed. I can move the detent, but far enough to unlock it. The lock is NOT sticky. I am older, but by no means weak, and my hands are at least normal strength.
The Zaan unlocks very easily when I hold the handle in my left hand and use my right forefinger-nail into the dent in the lock-blade.
I don't have a problem with this, as I don't need to close the knife until my use for it is finished. It remains a mystery to me, however, why Chris Reeve would design it this way...UNLESS he planned a two-handed closing. After all, the Sebenza closing and lock-bar design is so VERY different.

First off Sonny, congrats on your incoming 21:thumbup:

Secondly, thanks for the pic and the description of your experience with the Umnumzaan. I don't get it either. I've watched videos, seems to be a breeze closing it one handed. Did you say anything to CRK about it when you sent it in for spa treatment?

Mine has the lockbar stabilizer by the way, not sure if that makes a spit of difference but...we shall see. Tomorrow won't get here soon enough...:D

I am learning all of the Sebbie variations. Which is which between the top and the bottom knife in Paradiggums first picture? Its a 21 on the bottom but what version is the top one with the different frame cut out?

That there beauty is the love of my knife life..the Large Regular. A now discontinued (:() version of the Sebenza.

...between the top and the bottom would be the Umnumzaan..is that what you were asking?

I received my Zaan today, and find initially that the 21 and Zaan are nearly identical in length. The handle is a little awkward around the first two fingers due to the lockbar having a funky pointy ridge to it where the nail indent is, but it opens like a dream. Using the motion that simplespeed describes with a pic, it pops open like smooooooth.

However, I have not figured a real nice way to close it yet; though I can do it one handed unlike Sonny.

Edit: I will add, my small and large 21s all have more meat showing the the lockbar to push against, and they are easier to move vs. my Zaan on which you have a pointy ridge to push against, with less surface area to grip and apply force with and a stiffer bar, so it doesn't close easily like my 21s.

Just came in and it's smooth action reminds me of the Sebenza. I've had zero issue opening/closing one handed and it seems a break in period will not be necessary

Thanks for all the pics and info guys!

I'm loving the Umnumzaan already!
