Anyone Build Knives from Kits like those from KNIFEKITS.com and Jantz Supply??

And if you want to get one of the best knife blanks available.... try to locate a Falkniven F1, S1 or A1 blade blank. I don't think it gets any better than that. Laminated VG10 steel.

I don't know if they sell them anymore, but if I were you... I would look arround.

I have a Becker Companion blade blank (from Camilus) somehere... I should slap some scales on it and start using it!

I recently acquired a Kephart kit with walnut scales (Condor). Nothing fancy but this will be my first build and I didn't want to make a disaster out of an expensive kit. If I screw this up...then oh well I'll get another one and try again :) At the moment, I don't have shop space or power tools (other than a hand drill and dremmel) and will need to be resourceful so this will be a good learning experience. Much like backpacking or sharpening knives, I am hoping this is an activity that provides more zen than curse words.

Wife bought me a kit from Man Crates (.com) a few years ago for Christmas. After a bit of digging around on the web, it appears to be a kit sourced from Jantz. For the $100 she spent, it wasn't a bad kit. Came with all the parts, instructions, tools to build, and even a small vice, and an assortment of files to finish off the scales. It's not a bad knife at all - smooth action, takes and holds a decent edge, locks up strong, and centers well after a bit of adjustment. Only real complaint is where the clip sits on the the knife - it's not uncomfortable, but looks a bit odd. Been thinking about building another one, just getting it direct from Jantz.

Have to say, it get plenty of pocket time, and might be one of the best gifts I ever received!

What steel is the blade made from? Looks like a decent kit!

It's not marked on the blade, and the kit only said 'stainless'.

If you look on Jantz, it lists the same kit as 605 8A (kit # is KV605). But, I don't know anything about the steel, or where it fall in the hiarchy of steels.
