I am doing some research. It seems the "basalt fiber laminate" has the texture of a very coarse canvas micarta but is a lot stronger. Anyone tried to build knife with it?

If I am not mistaken, the strength goes like this:
carbon fiber laminate > basalt fiber laminate > glass fiber laminate (g10) > micarta

As long as it's easier to work with the Carbon fiber. I have a good size sheet of it and there is only 2 sets of scales cut from it. It sucks to work with, crazy itchy. I think the great thing about micarta and G10 is the color options. And for what we use it for the strength it has is over kill. But I'm always interested in new materials. I will bevwatchingbthis thread.

I agree with JT. Even regular G10 or Micarta is well above any "necessary" toughness for knife and tool handles. I'm not sure under what circumstances more strength would be advantageous, but if it makes a decent handle, then I wouldn't mind seeing some examples.

I totally agree in all these things the strength is an overkill anyways. The only thing matters is the look. The basalt board I saw has a unique golden (slightly brown) shimmer that glass fibers do not have.

The basalt fiber board is the most flexible among all those mentioned. They made very high end surf board with this material. Not sure how flexibility is helping knife making though.

Once I make a bit more progress I will bring some samples.
