I just traded into my 3rd Randall, but my first Randall user...I took it for a walk, and it is a pretty sweet knife, reminds me of all my previous blackjacks, but a bit MORE. Anyway, I dont know the model, the sheath says #5, I guess thats the model, but I dont know. it has a 5 inch blade, and has a stag handle...very cool. I like it.
Anyways, just wondering. Gene

I have a model 3 with a 5" blade and stag handle that's been around the block a couple of times with me. I got it new in the early seventies, started carrying it hunting and camping right from the get go. The blade has a dark patina as does the sheath. They're too good a knife to be relegated to a showcase.

I've got a couple Randall knives that I've carried. Truth be told, I've bee a little disappointed in the fit/finish, but they are quality knives.

No, you can't have my Bird and Trout. ;)

I might grab a Blackjack 1-7 as a user.

Trying to decide between Leather and Black Micarta

I have owned all the BJ line over the years..one at a time. And I would say that the 1-7 is the least usefull one! I have been sipping a beer or two tonight so the models elude me...but I believe its the Trailmaster of something...short 4.5inch blade. Now thats a knife. I am big time Scandi guy, and prefer my edge to run into my fingers as I use a knife...but even with the choil distance..blackjacks just feel good in the hand. It has that, lasting feeling. Solid.
To explain my distaste for the 1-7, its to long to comfortably carve with, and to light to chop with...its a fighter..and I got fists that do that;)

This ones fit and finish are out the window...someone rehandled it..its a mess. I like it though.

I want it as a fighter. I have fists also (and have used them frequently), but want a jabber.

I carry a Bear MGC stag handle drop point as a bush knife for the other tasks.

BTW, If you dislike the Blackjack 1-7's and have one laying around, please send it to me so it doesn't bother you any longer LOL.

Anyway, thanks for the insight, much appreciated. I would tend to agree with your observations.

It is the Trailguide you're thinking of if it looks like this one.Though I think that these days they're usually stacked leather, micarta or (imo) lower quality stag.

I carried a number 14 for years as a woods knife. But it was way too heavy for what it gave in the way of cutting performance, so it got sold off. I went to lighter weight better cutters in the mode of George Sears.

I was just not that impressed with it.

I have both the older Trailguide with the stacked handle and the Blackjack 1-7 and would agree that the Trailguide fits the bill well as an all around knife. The 1-7 is not as universal to me, but still a nice knife. Lucky I have both.

My 1-7 stays beside my 870 in the closet for things that go bump in the night. My B.G. Andrews bushcrafter goes to the woods with me.--KV

I carried my model 16 diver model in the field while in the Army Nat. Guard, It was Long Range Surveillance Unit. I jumped it about a dozen times, used it in waterborne ops and also in the ocean while on vacation. Lately I've been carrying my Bark River Bravo 1 on hikes and excursions unless it's really wet out then I'll go back to my trusty Randall.

My #25 Trapper always comes out with me during hunting season. i have two#15s a carbon & an S.S. that get some camping and trail use and a #14 & an#18 that I play with siting in my living room, just to long and heavy to lug around all day.LOL Getting old stinks

Id like to own one someday....Problem is, after I save up the dough, then theres the long wait.... It would be a long time, so used is probably the only way Ill ever own one.

Some of their designs I really love...

Gene, keep us posted, and maybe a review!! We dont get much Randall action round here....

Hey j williams
If you do a quick search on line for Randall Made Knife Dealers you can some time pick up new Randall knives that are pre ordered by them, prices are a little higher but it beats a five year wait.

Or order the Randall you want and start saving for it. That's how I got my #14, just saved a few bucks a week while I waited for about 2 and 1/2 years. Made it seem fairly painless when I got the call that it was ready.

I thought you had to pay up front with Randall?

I have a Mod. 14 that I take on the App. Trail or if I am with the Scouts. I had a cobbler make me a sheath that could be attached to my backpack that allows me to carry it vertically handle down or horizontally. Since it is not a stainless version, I blued the blade and have a small bottle of oil for blade care while sitting around the campfire telling lies. I really enjoy this fine knife.
