Anyone carry a RANDALL in the woods?

Gunknifenut:

You have either a model 1 or a model 5. Because they're the same size and shape, sheaths for these knives are stamped with only the blade length, as they are interchangeable. The model 1 has a slight "dip" in the spine near the ricasso, as you can see here:

The model 5 has a straight spine without this "dip," and has thumb grooves instead.

As far as carrying and using Randalls, I think you'd be awfully surprised how many people do that. For some reason, most of the more hard-core Randall owners don't spend a lot of time on BFC, but there are lots of people who have lots of Randalls, and plenty of them are users.

I have an old 4" number 7 that I use for bird and small game. I also have a newer #23 that I bought for deer hunting but it has yet to taste flesh !

I thought you had to pay up front with Randall?

Well, it's been about 8-10 years since I got my last Randall, but at the time I think I just put a deposit down. Wasn't even a large deposit, maybe 10% or thereabout. Maybe things have changed. Or maybe my memory is faulty.

That's correct - a $50 deposit will do it. The remainder is due about three months before the date the knife will be completed.

I've been carrying my R1 (7') since the early 60's, including to some far away places where many of the natives were less than friendly. It is not a good hunting knife if a person is unacostomed to using something that long, other wise I've not had any trouble with it.

THanks alot. its a model 5 then..thumb jimping., no hollow on the spine.

Carried my 15 to OEF. Traded a #1 for a user skinner model, forget the number. I will carry that one into the woods for hunting.

I also have a Bird and Trout on order which I should get in 2010. Not sure if I will make that one a user or not though since I have a Martin similar to it.

I'm always looking for Randall users since I hate being the guy to put the first marks on one.

My B&T is my favorite Randall. Not a great B&T knife, but an excellent all-round knife. Use it!

I might grab a Blackjack 1-7 as a user.

Trying to decide between Leather and Black Micarta

I'd go micarta, the leather BlackJack's I seen that were used hard, tended to develop small problems like swelling and looseness.

You could tighten up the nut in the back and keep it oiled. A leather handle seems warmer in my hand while working it. Micarta can be slick but it cleans up easier.

I agree, a good hidden tang leather handle just feels great in hand..and with a little maintenence, they will stay for a long time.
I just checked out Randalls website...I really like the look of the model 25, very cool grind and size. Other than that..the model 5 that I have just about do it for me..I didnt really get to excited about many more.

Just $50 up front, and they guarantee you pay 2009 list price the moment you receive your knife - in 2014. Yes, and 2014 is official.;)

Edit: Ah - just saw someone beat me to it.

Yep, it's a real shame they make such boring knives, alright.

I am old enough, as I am sure their are others here, to have been using knives before the current popularity of custom knives. Looking for a high quality knife 40 years ago did not offer much selection. In reality, it really wasnt until the late 70's and into the 80's that custom knives became easily available to the average knife user. So, Randall filled this void, and did it well. Randall knives have been carried by many of the top outdoorsmen, with Angier immediately coming to mind. Despite owning, and using a wide variety, of custom knives, Randalls still get a high mark in my book. They offer enough models that you would be hard pressed not to find one to suit your purposes. Also, they hold (or increase) their value even if used. I have owned several and no doubt will use many more.

One of my prized possessions is a model 25-5. It has seen much use on deer in past hunting seasons.

If you ever find yourself without oil and it gets wet rub the blade down with dry cool fire ashes until it is dry. This acts like an absorbant for the moisture and finger prints.

I have a Mod. 14 that I take on the App. Trail or if I am with the Scouts. I had a cobbler make me a sheath that could be attached to my backpack that allows me to carry it vertically handle down or horizontally. Since it is not a stainless version, I blued the blade and have a small bottle of oil for blade care while sitting around the campfire telling lies. I really enjoy this fine knife.
If you ever find yourself without oil you can use cool dry fire ash to clean your blade and get the moisture and finger prints off.

I use this Model 26 for flyfishing, hunting, camping, and just around the house.
