I am not a sailor or an ocean person by any means. What function does the spike of the tusk serve? I am genuinely curious.
It's a marlin spike. It'll help you take apart wet line knots/bends. Jam it in there and pry! You can use it to splice line if it's a standalone, but not on a knife like this. Useful for linework but most guys I know prefer separated knife and spike.
Still, very cool to see. Spyderco seems to have a strong tie to the sea: easy to use knives with gloves on, corrosion resistant blades, specific tools to free whales from fishing lines, this knife, the dedicated autonomy knife, it's all pretty cool.
The Glesser's also own a sail boat company.
What I was going to say. I belive that they make very expensive and high-quality carbon fiber racing yachts.
@ nccole,
I see that you like me have found a way to justify a new knife. In my case I use the marlin spike for picking out horses feet. I guess I could have just picked up a $8.00 hoof pick... but the I wouldn't have a really well made Spyderco hoof pick with a great blade to boot. Love your use for the spike too.
If Spyderco came up with a lower cost Tusk I would be all over it. But as it stands, no matter how useful the knife could be, I can't justify spending that kind of money on it, and even if I had the disposable funds to spend, I couldn't bring myself to do to a $200 knife what I would do to a $40 knife.
