Anyone cary a user EDC AND a higher end EDC simultaneously?

Hey man you know what, I did the same thing until very recently. I have a black-blade spyderco paramilitary 2 and it's the best knife I own (I got it for my b-day; im 17 so I don't have a huge budget for knives) so I would always carry around like my leek or a needs work with it.
So here's when I kinda stopped doing this: I was out in the greenbelt by my house throwing my SOG Tomahawk at a tree and just doing little outdoor tasks for fun. I decided to break out the paramilitary and was reluctant to use it to its full potential at first, but then I didn't hold back anymore. I was whacking branches right off of trees and whittling the crap out of sticks and it really just felt good to use it like that. The edge held up pretty well and I'm not bad at sharpening to I knew I could restore it again. I imagine it would be different if I owned like an Emerson or something more expensive like that.

Hey I don't mean this in a critical way but... Clamshell packaging? Seriously?! That's like the one kind of thing I never hesitated to cut, even when I wound up putting a real sharp edge on a knife that I couldn't stop babying. I don't see how they could possibly pose any kind of real challenge other than it just being somewhat difficult to open them sometimes. A lot of twisting of the blade and all that...

Anyway I don't really have any high-end knives. I had a Benchmade Kulgera that I considered pretty high-end and sometimes I would carry a Case Trapper or something else as a beater, but I don't really like to do that anymore. I have an Izula that I'll use for pretty much anything, and a Leatherman ST300 that I will use if the "anything" seems like it will beat the blade up a little too much. You know, scraping battery terminals, prying things, etc.

I haven't had to use it much since I got my little Gerber Shard though. I found once I got a little mini-prybar tool like so that there's not a lot of knife-abusive tasks that I can't do with it.

I do this all the time. I'll have one of my custom EDC's strapped to my belt. Then the blade on my S66, and just out of habit, the Pacific Salt goes in the pocket... Usually when I'm paying for coffee, I realize what I've done. lol

To me that seems a bit like buying a Ferrari and towing it everywhere and than getting to the track and driving the hauler around the track.

I'm pretty careful with what I use my nice EDC knives for but I almost always carry a multitool with me so I could use its blade for rougher cutting tasks. I've been thinking about carrying a smaller folder as a beater. I may still do that when I decide what to buy to carry for a second knife. Besides me using it for rougher cutting tasks I could also use it as a loaner if someone asks me to borrow a knife.

I prefer to carry 3 blades on me. I have my pocket clip folder, usually something I would prefer not to damage. I have a neck knife, something small that handles most EDC tasks. Lastly I have a Leatherman or SAK, for the offchance I need a tool, and the blades of them are beater blades (easy to sharpen, and I won't lose sleep over them being damaged). So, I guess I would technically have an expensive EDC and a beater EDC. I just throw another into the mix to give me a range of blade sizes. Does that make me weird?

I use all my knives, but some more carefully than others. I usually have a "beater" knife on my just in case someone wants to borrow it or have have to cut something truly damaging to a knife. I understand the thought of the OP.

Different people enjoy knives in different ways. My dad keeps al of his, except a couple of SAKs and Opinels, new in their boxes and never uses them, while I thoroughly enjoy when a nice knife gets some wear marks from doing some work.

If I think I won't use a knife, I don't buy it. My most expensive knife is a $800.- hunting fixed blade that I got a few years ago and it wears a great patina from boar and deer, plus a couple of scratches from some rough trips. Oh, and my horse bit the sheath once and left a funny mark (he's weird, probably takes after his owner).

I do tend to use my SAKs and multitools for most of the messy or potentially damaging jobs, they are cheap and their blades are easy to fix if they chip or roll.

Typically carry at least 2 knives at all times. A smaller knife that covers most the tasks and a lg custom or high end production folder. I do use my high end knives but appropriately. I am a firm believer in the right tool for the right task. There is just something fun and satisfying when I carry one of my customs. I've got em why not use em.

There are two types of Knife enthusiasts in my opinion. Some collect/use and some just use.

Personally, I never buy a knife that I am not going to use. But then, I have never been a collector of anything...

I know a lot of guys from my Watch forum that buy watches only to put them in a safe deposit box. I guess they visit them on the weekends....Scratch head

I would say I definitely fall in the collector/user category. I love to use my Q36 Overkill but you wont catch me using my custom Onion Wrinkle to make a fuzz stick. Another perfect example would be my WH EDC10 I carry/use regularly but my B09 with Damascus and Mammoth sits in my display case on the wall. IMO just because you don't use a knife does not mean you can't enjoy it.
