Anyone cook with Cast iron ?

We only wipe out most of our cast iron in the field. If something decides to stick a little bit, a little salt takes it out.

My pop told me that his mom (this is back during WW1) would just wipe out the skillet with a piece of brown paper bag and they were good to go.
I think we have overcomplicated things since then ;)

Estate sales and garage sales are good places to find cast iron cookware. Wagner is collectible, so is an investment as well.
You can frequently find a pan that is totally gunked up and is correspondingly cheap. Put it upside down in a self cleaning oven for the cleaning cycle. It will take it back to gray metal. Then proceed (quickly or it will start rusting) with your favorite seasoning routine. I use multiple heat to smoking then cool off a bit cycles, rubbing with peanut oil each time.

My cast iron skillets are ancient. My mom died at 85, and she didn't get them new. She told me to never use strong dishwashing detergent on them or they would lose their non-stick qualities and have to be re-seasoned. I tried another corn bread recipe today. It is a bit crumbly, not as good as Monday's. But it didn't stick at all. Good stuff.

I concur
Cornbread MUST be cooked in cast iron to be authentic
That pyrex stuff don't cut it for cornbread :thumbdn:

Thrift shops===>
There are TONS of cast iron pots/pans
This one thrift shop I go to has a whole wall of cast iron pans

Nothing beats cast iron over a hot camp fire.
PITDOG one word of caution if you buy castiron, never put cool/cold water into a hot frypan/pot as it can crack.
You probably knew this already but I've seen more then one person do this

Yeah I did know that but good point anyway. I used to weld cast iron parts up years ago and it was a nightmare, you would weld one side up and the other would crack, the trick was to pre-heat the whole thing and not let it cool too quickly !
Can the cooking pots be used on electric oven rings or just gas flame and campfires ?

Cast iron works fine on an electric stove. But don't use it on the glass-covered ones. It will leave a ring.

For frying, the only ones I use are cast iron. Cast iron frying pans make cooking on an electric stove much easier with better even heat control and less chance of burning. Cast iron is easy to clean and care for, and practically lasts forever.
