Anyone do sharpening/refurbishment? Need it on a 10V PM2.

Thinking of this patina'd, user PM2 in 10V, has a substantial patina which I do not mind, and I am just about to invest in a sharpening system and learn on other not so important knives before I hazard touching this one. Was wondering if anyone provides a sharpening/edge refurbishment service, maybe clear up patina too but I don't care about that. Is that something that is done? Can provide pics if needed. Thank you for any feedback!

Thank you! WValtakis WValtakis I am waiting for a check to clear and it is Sunday, so once that happens I am going to buy a gold account and be able to PM. However, I was wondering what you think of this right here, if I could perhaps enlist your services to put a nice beautiful edge on a 10V PM2, as well as maybe a reprofiling of the angle? I have heard it said that if you reprofile a PM2 just a couple of degrees it is much better, though I am wayyy far off from re-profiling.

If you think you might be able to help me out, I would love to speak with you further! Thanks for listening!

Unfortunately, I don't really sharpen as a service...not really set up for it. I freehand sharpen on diamond stones as necessary during the course of modifications, but I don't have the equipment for specific angle sharpening or high polish edges🤷‍♂️

You could always send it to Spyderco for sharpening, but you'd get a factory edge angle. I know a guy on the Spyderco factory forum that could do it, but I don't think he hangs out here.

Thanks anyways!

Huh, I was just about to join the Spydie forum, too. I'm actually not super worried about the angles. Moreso just having a nice, quality edge, not made on a machine (not cooled). It sucks, because people really seem to not like to do services this small.
But yeah, if I end up with this knife, my first priority - just a good, nice, clean, quality edge on it.
Then, maybe a reprofile the way folks on here say it should be done.

Just send the blade without the handle. I'll do the rest.
Awesome! So you've got me on this, David? So happy to hear! Really appreciate it.

So, the guy selling me the PM2 told me he is going to update me with new pics and a final price by Wed. or Thurs., and I will also have a gold account and be able to PM by then, so we can discuss.
Here is a picture, in case you want to know what we might be working with. There's a better pic like, nine ones down. Coyote Brn scales.

If you do join up over there, toxophilius is the guy I was thinking of. And just FYI, Spyderco does all their sharpening cold, either by hand or under coolant when powered equipment is used.

That is good to know. People are always speaking of "overheated factory edges" and how one must go through a few sharpens in order to clear this material out and fully experience the steel, so that is what had me wondering.

There is a thread about that very subject running on the factory forum, which is where Sal chimed in about sharpening under coolant. Of course the apex is very thin, and it would not be impossible to overheat it even with coolant, but it seems unlikely. There are a lot of other factors involved, not the least of which are human perceptions.

David does great work. I had him make me a karambit and the edge on it was amazing.
Oh yeah, David was one of the dudes I was reading when I lurked this forum last year. He is an awesome guy. I'm probably gonna give him more business, as I have seen him do some things that I just really FW and really respect. Wharnie Yojumbo style Voyager? Yes please!

I want to get into good edges.

Huh, that is wild. Because in my experience, the factory edges have been perfect on Spydercos. Maybe the bevel at the tip is a little too big for my REX 45 PM2 but they're GREAT, really. 5 comp locks, 3 backlocks and a fixed blade that I bought because I needed performance out of the box, and Spyderco has delivered for me. S45VN, Cruwear and REX 45 is what I do most of my cutting with.

I'm excited to join the Spydie forum, seems Sal is a little more responsive there and you have a lot of Spydie nerds who know lots of stuff. I have some questions to ask there. I have a Civilian that is old and not listed on Spydiewiki, and I wanna learn about it, just as one example. Talking to other Spyder-heads who care about this sort of thing sounds amazing :)
I have seen your posts lurking over there!

The edge on my PM2 10v has been Excellent!
With only a touch up or 2, is due for another.

For factory edges.. I like to use them, touch them up, use them, touch them up and so on.
Until touching them up doesn't really bring them back.

After that, I reprofile by hand and bring the apex to fresh steel.
That's when I've found most steels, really come to life!

I've reprofiled a couple new one's and they seem to need that touch up, more so, after..

So I guess what I'm saying is.. I've found it useful to use the knife and touch it up, till that doesn't work the best. Then have it reprofiled/sharpened..

I just ordered a sharpmaker today! I have no idea about reprofiling or microbevels but hope to learn! Especially by hand on diamond stones. I'd really like that, but I am sure that will take some practice! Hopefully the sharpmaker starts me out right.
