anyone do the zip tie WAVE trick?

i'll try to post a pic when i borrow my friends camera tonight, anyways there are many different zip ties out there and some work better then others, first i used the cheap 2.00 for 100 ones and they fell apart after a few openings, i then went on to this "premium" zip tie i got at homedepot that had a rounded dome and get this "stainless steel" retainers, you know that plastic thing that sticks out and holds the zip tie from moving? well it's stainless steel on the ones i got, kinda pricey at 10 bucks for a 100 but they work so well! imo better then the real wave, i also tried a low profile zip tie that looks much better but did not work very well at all

If the issue was pressed, Ernie's patent would be worthless.

What you'd have to establish is "prior art."

You'd have to show either that Mr. Emerson was aware of the this method of opening or that it was "generally know."

This thread would seem to prove that it was not "generally known."

Establishing that Mr. Emerson specifically knew it might be difficult. And even if he did, it's still not necessarily prior art. It's a grey area.

If you think you can establish prior art, you should challenge Mr. Emerson's patent right now. The interesting thing about patents is that the longer you wait, the more difficult it becomes to establish prior art especially via the "general knowledge" route. Why? Because if this "invention" was just general knowledge, someone would have challenged it sooner; that's why. The longer you wait, the harder it'll be.

There were probably a few guys who maneuvered thumbstuds, etc. to open folding knives in a way that resembles the wave method, but I don't believe it was a widespread practice. I had never heard of putting a zip tie through an opening hole until this tread materialized; it certainly is not, and never was, a common sight at knife conventions to see dozens of knife conneseurs with zip ties through their blades.

I think some people are somewhat jealous of the patent because it is a pretty simple idea; not dumb, just simple and straightforward. Therefore quite a few guys feel that they would have developed it if they had just piddled around in their shops for a few more minutes.

Oh well...

Alexander Graham Bell beat that other guy to the patent office by a matter of hours.

Um, diletante..the point of the wave feature IS to open the knife when you draw it from your pocket. So of course if you don't want that to happen you wouldn't want to modify your knife to do that.:) :)

why does everyone want to jump on EKI just because the man wants to protect his pattent.

If cold steel started making enduras and delicas with a hole, ats-55, spyder edge serations and a clip, and claimed them as its own, would you be all pissed that spyderco was on the warpath about it?

If the wave or thing like it were around before why didn't someone document it and chalange the pattent?

Admit it, its a great feature that you wish was on other knives, but EKI wants to get the benifit of their idea and they don't want to share.

nice, maybe not. they don't have to be nice. Its a buisness, and they are in it to make knives, have fun a knife shows that can be deducted from taxes, and make money.

Soon the wave pattent will run out. Till then, if you want one, make your own knife for yourself or modify one, or buy an EKI.

I modified a delica to wave. Do I think EE really cares what I do? I doubt it. I do however, give credit where it is due, cause it is his idea, not mine.

If you don't like his knives, then you don't have to buy them, but don't crucify the guy for protecting his livelyhood.

i don't think anyone is getting mad at emerson or anything like that, dunno where you got that from or maybe i missed a post but anyways i agree with the fact that business is business patents are what protects people ideas and lets them benefit from it cause they are the one that thought of the idea in the first place, do i wish every knife had an axis lock? yes. am i mad at BM cause they have the rights to it? no

Maybe my computer isn't showing all of the posts in this thread. I don't see "everyone" jumping on Mr. Emerson. In fact, the posts I see when I read this thread seem to go just the other way.

Well, I'm off to check my browser settings...

FWIW, the best zip ties are Thomas and Betts Ty-raps. These are the ones Manji found (I think) with the stainless steel locking tab.
And they are patented!
The ones I've got are marked "T&B ty-rap pat'd".

This info is for all you zip-tie collectors out there! I use these things at work by the fistfull.
