Anyone else a fixed daily carry fan over folders?

I have been leaning further and further away from folders lately. For daily carry I almost always have one of my two Sean Perkins integral fixed blades. Hell, even as fixed blades with rather large pocket sheaths they are smaller than my Endura or Calypso in the folded state! I like to carry my Cetan Tanto kit knife in an IWB sheath that I made for it, too. I also frequently carry a REKAT Fang for light utility use. I dunno. I like folders and I have plenty of them, but I rarely carry any other than my Case Appaloosa bone canoe anymore. Anyone else seeing this happen?
On a related note, it's probably illegal for me to be carrying these fixed blade knives, too, but I can hardly see myself either a) being searched or b)having a 2" bladed Perkins mistaken for a dangerous weapon (it would be in the right hands, but not mine!).

Well, I'd have to include myself in the fixed over folder fan category. In the last few weeks (just since it has gotten cold enough around here to regularly wear an overshirt or sweater), I have almost always got either my BM 145 or my Moran IWB, along with my REKAT UNK around my neck. It's pretty much illeagal around here as well (which, incidentally, is the same state as College Park, if that is where you are), but I don't care. I still use my folders, which I carry as well, for mundane tasks. The fixed blades are for emergencies... so to speak...

I personally carry a fixed blade all of the time. Depending on my mood, I carry in one of at least 8 different postions. Sometime's in plain view. Sometimes concealed. I have carried knives my whole life. I have never been searched. Doubt I ever will. All the cops I know, know I carry my knives. Most of them carry them too. I sometimes carry a folder. I always carry a fixed blade. But that is just me.

I try to whenever I can, but here in SoCal, it's too warm most of the time to get away with IWB. But I often go the slip sheath in pocket mode, also frowned on by authorities here. Fortunately, I don't fit the profile of the police for random stop and field interrogation (age does have some perks!).
I have a few FBs that work well in this way;
Moran w/Edgeworks sheath
Rekat Fang
Rinaldi w/Concealex
Cetan w/pouch sheath
Ward w/kydex
The only other problem is who is around when you withdraw the knife to use it, some folks are shocked by even the smallest FB, even if the blade is shorter than say, a Military. Folders are still the most "acceptable" in urban settings.
Sigh. Eventually we plan to move to a more rural area, where there should be less problem with daily belt carry.

I ALWAYS carry a fixed blade. My Cold Steel Desperado comes with me everywhere I go, it even sleeps with me. A fixed blade is just so much more substantial than a folder. It's what a knife is supposed to be.

Brings to mind something that happened to me a few weeks ago, which shows that I have lived in the Republik of Marylundt too long. I was coming out of a Hardees during a trip, and noticed a man headed into the restaurant with one of the Schrade Old Timer Sharpfingers on his belt. I remember being a little shocked, not by the knife, but that he was carrying it so openly. Then it hit me: I was in West Virginia at the time. Ahhhh... I like that state.

Personally, if I am going to go to the trouble of concealing a fixed blade, I'm going to opt for my Glock 19 instead. Oregon has pretty laid back concealed carry laws, so since I have a CCW, I would do that rather than carry a bigger belt knife. Of course, I always have an Emerson folder or neck knife on my person. I just don't like small belt-wear fixed blades...my smallest is a Benchmade Nimravus, and it's attached to my pack.

For my part, folders are for utility or emergency back-up.

I carry a seven-inch CS recon-scout in my vehicle and depend on the Moran/Edgeworks sheath combo for personal carry when needed. Of course, the back-up choice include (soon, I hope) the BF Sifu, Emerson Commander or CQC7-b, Genesis 1 or Impulse. (Depends on my mood!)

while I always carry a folder (Carnivour, CQC7, or Spydie Rookie), I often sport a neck knife. It just gives me a secure and secret feeling. And a couple of weeks ago I replaced the knife I carry in my truck-from a Gerber Gator (which now stays with my backpack) to my EK Commando knife. The way I figure it is if I'm stranded in my truck and the need arises for a knife, that big 'ol EK can do about anything! I also keep a Blackjack AWAC in my desk at work, just in case a disgruntled employee goes berserk. (insert winking smiley face here)

Okay,
The secret is out.

While I always carry two folders on my person, I now carry an Emerson LaGriffe or the REKAT Fang almost full time also. As much as I love my folders, the strength and simplicity of a fixed blade cannot be argued with. You never have to worry about a fix blade folding up on you.

I am now conducting, shall we say, a social experiment, on how large a fix blade can be carried without alarming all the little sheeple one encounters in day to day activities.
What I'm finding so far is smaller fix blades draw attention a little less than larger blades for those who actually notice them. I'm also finding that most people don't give other people more than a passing glance and hence the smaller blades don't get noticed as easily.
For example, I go to Disneyworld on a regular basis (twice or three times a month on average)and it is an excellent place for this type of experiment with a huge diversity of different people from everywhere and from every type of background and socio-economic status to work with. A really great place to people watch too! Back to task:
I carried my Blackjack Trail Guide on on e visit and the whole day I was getting some troubled and somewhat odd looks from those who saw the knife. Many people saw it as it was not concealed. Then again many people did not give me or it a second look as people in a crowd seem to be focused elsewhere rather than on other people. Some that saw it looked at me like I was a would be murderer while others seemed a bit, well, puzzled but concerned, a few just shrugged it off.

Conclusion so far is it might have been a little large for public carry and people, most all types of people, are generally paranoid about > 4 3/4" bladed knives.

Next trip I carried the Nimravus Cub (3 1/2" blade) on the belt, in the open, and some folks noticed, a few got a bit wide eyed, but most did not seem to notice and if they did, did not seem to really care all that much.

Conclusion so far is the smaller knives don't draw as much attention, but when they do, you don't see the wide eyed look of someone who thinks they are intended prey of a maddog butcher looking for a victim as much as with a larger knife. Duh...

Some of you are thinking "how does he even get into that place with a knife carried in the open?"

My appearance is the very definition of conservative, that's why. People say I look like the stereotypical executive/CEO type. So I don't get hassled too much. I seem to look like someone important. LOL.

Also helps with my little experiment as I don't look like a menacing type of person, so people are not "threatened" by my overall appearance. I get to gauge their reactions when they see the knife as opposed to when they see me.

I'm thinking about a 5-6" blade next time but that might just be pushing the envelope a little too much. Need to reflect on this a little more. Maybe I should arrange bail bond before I go. Hmmm....

If I could, I'd carry a fixed blade 90% of the time. There is no chance that it will close on my fingers, I don't lose time in opening it, and it looks fabulous. There's something about the line of a fixed blade - and unsheathed, the steel is right there to please your eye. Ahh.
But it is a sad fact of life in most big cities that it is easier and more probable for the constabulary to accuse you of carrying a concealed weapon if you are carrying a fixed blade in a concealment sheath or tucked away. Most logical carries, behind the back, neck knife, inverted in an inside jacket pocket, IWB, shoulder rig, all can be construed as illegal concealment. The vast majority of people equate fixed blades with weapons or hunting. Carrying on a belt sheath may not be concealment [but chances are you'll have a jacket over it in colder climes] but most fixed blades of any size tend to shock the citizenry. I've had my share of aggravation. I do have a nice little Deringer that noone could complain about, but unless I'm attacked by an elf, it's not very tactical. I carry my fixed blades in the car, leave them in the office, at home, in the bushes on the way to work..., but I don't carry them as often as I'd like.
Folders are more convenient and easier to explain to the citizenry and the constabulary, although big, nasty looking tacticals like the Hobbit, the Applegate-Fairburn, bigger Emersons etc are at least on the edge. Unless you deploy the folder in public, the faint of heart don't see any steel at all - just 3"-4" of handle, or a clip. Fewer questions, fewer problems. I carry big tacticals too, but in highly civilised [ie, pretentious] settings I'll take a smaller folder like a BM Pardue or anything that looks expensive and therefore more "gentlemanly" ie pearl scales, engraving, damascus etc, or the little Deringer.
If I had my druthers, I'd always have at least a 5" Nealy or a 6" Lightfoot on me. When I'm out of the city, I do. Given the least bit of an excuse, I'll pull out the big fellas: camp knife, bowie, tanto.
My wife tells me I'm nuts. She's wrong, I'm a knut: knife knut.

I have sunk in to a rut of carrying either my Anso Damadrop or my new Nevling knife in an in-pocket sheath on all normal occasions. I still carry my RandomTask to the gym, I just don't want my pants falling down from the weight of all the knives

With dress I now carry my NEW Ralph Apogee!!!(just a little excited about this one

Don't forget to pay your taxes...they eventually become my knives:)

Greco Persian in pocket slip sheath at ALL times except on airlines, where I carry a Spyderco Native.

One should only carry folder as a beater or when one absolutely CANNOT carry a real knife because of metal detectors.

Crawford tanto neck knife in pocket sheath with extended pocket clip - can unsheath and resheath with one hand, practically invisible, instantly available. Mostly I use it to remove staples; the general office reaction when I whip it out for a task is that people notice it, it obviously registers with them, but not enough to actually raise an eyebrow. Very handy. Can't quite pull that off with a 5" Aikuchi, more's the pity . . .

If it weren't for the sheeple out there, I would prefer a fixed blade for everyday carry over a folder.

Hello members,

As for me the fixed blade is the way to go personally, I find the fixed blade much more available to accuire with a simple index to handle and pull type of movement, than with a grab, index , thumbstud, piviot to open type movement, which usally requires
a hand re positioning upon opening, unless one is using the FLICK and hope i can get on target method.

I like the fact that the Fixed blade design has no moving parts.

Myself i would hate to be in a position where do to Grime, grit, mud, or other objects such as Coins carried in a pocket ,
could possibly Jam the operation of a folder.

A deputy friend of mine had just that Coin in the Blade Race type jam happen to him, at least it didnt occur during a vital use time.

anyway just my thoughts .

Thanks Allen Blade

Hi Gents If I had my choice I would carry both they both have their own task to perform. When living in wasington I carried both but that was in a town were a lot of people carried. Now that I live in california I carry a fixed blade when I think I can get away with it.I also carry a folder of some kind.

I carry a fixed blade everwhere (well - almost). Sometimes a folder is just more convenient.

I've always carried a folder, usually a Microtech LUDT, but for the sake of variety, I bought an R.J.Martin Kozuka. It has become my daily carry knife, and can't seem to get enough of using it. It's small enough to fit my front pocket much like a folder, but the draw is faster then any folder I've tried, even a good automatic. The A2 tool steel beats the hell out of the ubiquitous ATS-34/154CM used in the majority of folders. It's also the sharpest knife (and the easiest to touch up) that I've ever had. I'm hooked.
