Oh man... I just got my hands on a Mountain Hardwear 'Alchemy Jacket', Shark color(3 shades of gray and some black), and this thing is AWSOME. I have this weird addiction to technical jackets... My friends trip on my knives, and my JACKETS! I don't rock climb, ski, snow board, etc. I don't even live where it snows. I DO love bein' out in the rain (used to live in Portland, OR), but don't like bein' wet.
I have a small collection of North Face, Arcteryx, 1 marmot, and now 1 Mountain hardware. I must say I am impressed with all the new softshell/ hardshell advancements. I cycle and generally hang out outside M-F 9am-6:30pm. I just gotta know (since I have obviously found the Mecca(is that PC?) of Knife knuts) if there are any of you out there that like Jackets too?? If so, do you have it bad for jackets like knive?? Let's hear it people. Knives, flashlights, guns, and JACKETS... bikes maybe even.

Technical Jacket afficianado;)

My wife and I have matching Arc'teryx Theta AR jackets and she has a Mountain Hardwear Alchemy jacket, too. All I have for an inner lining is an LL Bean fleece jacket. Technical jackets are awesome! We go camping and snowboarding so they get a lot of use.

"I _AM_ a 'jacket junkie'!"

BIG time. No treatment has worked; no cure in sight.

My addiction is actually divided into two areas:

1. Collecting "wearables" - Carhartt, Barbour, etc.

2. Collecting "collectibles" (jackets that you can't buy just by walking into a store, etc. - eg.: a "Baywatch" cast jacket before the injunction; a crew jacket from a Springsteen tour; a crew jacket from a Pink Floyd tour; a motorcycle jacket from Mick and Keith from the "Steel Wheels" tour; 'raid' jackets from several LE agencies, etc.)

I cherish my Filson double mackinaw and also a carhardt. I've been eye balling some of the technical stuff too. Just bought a gore tex shell from Cabellas for travel as it is really light.

Good Afternoon All-

Yup, technically-advanced jackets are very cool. I've always been a big fan of the pullover, anorak-style jacket myself...especially when skiing. They seem to provide the best protection from snow/rain while still providing plenty of ventilation when needed.

Now, if you're looking for the best motorcycling leather jackets in the world, take a visit over to Langlitz Leathers to see what they have. I flew out to Portland, Oregon to be measured for mine to ensure a perfect fit. Langlitz owners know other Langlitz owners when they see them. The Wall Street Journal wrote a very interesting article about this company, too.

hmmm....

I got a jacket at the army surplus for 20.00. No name brand, has some fleece on the inside, pretty thin, lightweight jacket. I don't think it's the thickness or padding that keeps you warm, it's whether you have ropes around the collar and waist area to keep wind from getting in. None of the carhartt jackets I've seen have that, but my cheapo surplus jacket does. And it survived me through the michigan winter last year.

As for the waterproofing, I spray some "waterproofing" chemicals all over my jacket (and backpack). It's similar to 3m scotchgard, and you can usually find aerosol waterproofing in the boot section or automotive interior section of walmart or meijers or something. It's not waterproof, but it seems to be resistant for an acceptable period of time.

I'm kinda sorta a jacket junkie but with a different objective ... jackets basically function as my gear-carrier, so I'm always looking for interesting jackets that have lots of pockets, and interesting ways of carrying gear.

I'm a jacket junkie in that I've been searching for that perfect jacket for the past couple of years. Something that will keep me warm, isn't big and "poofy", won't make a swishing sound with the slightest movement, plenty of pockets, and will go with just about any occassion. There are plenty of jackets that I've tried on that fit into most of those requirements, but they never really felt right to me, and didn't fit the budget. Needless to say, the search continues..:(

Sort of. I appreciate any high performance item, regardless of what it is. I just picked up a The North Face Pamir fleece made of Gore Windstopper. Great, warm fleece that is not bulky at all (that's why I didn't get the Denali) I also have a TNF Mountain Light jacket I'm getting for Christmas. That way I can zip the fleece in for cold weather, and have both to wear seperatly. Got a good deal on the Mtn. Light off ebay, new with tags.

Hey cool, I just re-read, easewryder, you are a bicyclist. Cool beans, I spend a lot of time on my bicycle too. Except for you're in CA, you got it easy!!! :):):):)

I've been prepping for the winter already. I have a pair of thin cotton exercise pants (like pajamas almost) that I wear under my dockers or cargos (tuck the long johns into socks). Then I have a fleece zip-up that goes under my windbreaker. I wear a pair of 180's wrap arounds for my ears and neoprene gloves. I when riding, wind still tends to go into my collar area on my windbreaker, so I'm thinking about investing in a scarf. Other than that, I'm trying to think of a method to cover my face- the wind dries out your face and lips really, really bad.

Anyone else got tips or a sweet setup for the winter?

If your looking to cover your face on the bike, go to a bike shop and get a baliclava (sp). Pearl Izumi makes a nice one along with a full line of great winter cycling clothing.

I work at a bicycle shop so I ride a little. Great place to work, the discount is a lot of fun. I don't ride much in the winter though, only on the nice days.

Are those Arcteryx jackets really worth the price tag? The ones I've seen are all really light and the material is really thin. (For the best weight to protection ratio I still prefer Patagonia.)

Well thanks everyone, I feel 'normal'? now, heheh.

Steve Andrews, I am not familiar with The Buffalo Special 6 shirt, Berghaus , rab. What are they like?

Grnamin, the Theta AR is the IMO the BEST shell in existence right now, I have the much coveted black one( they seem to be rare here for some odd reason), and a Beta AR in Java(I currently have it in the trade forum though), A Gamma Lt (black of course) and a Sigma SV(guess te color) and believe me, I am set for all seasons, but I still can't kick the habit... You guys must be ecstatic about yours!

Cockroachfarm, I only have experience with Carhartt pants( which are indestructable), but your 'collecting' fascinates me and I am curious as to how you get your hands on stuff like that? As far as if Arcteryx is worth the money, I will admit they are knda pricey, but the features and details are astounding! Whoever designs this stuff is GOOD. I get everything kinda cheap, which is how I can afford to put one in the trading forum brand new -wink-. I had some reservations about how thin te things are, but then realized with such a thin shell(Theta AR-a 4 season shell), and a Softshell(Sigma SV or Gamma LT) I am pretty set year 'round, even in the northwest- I just wish I woulda known about it when I was messengering in Portland, OR. The light weight is perfect for layering and the details keep you cool, dry, warm, whatever! Some of the best $ I ever spent.

rt014, I don't know what Filson's are either, but you can't go wrong with tech Jackets, dude... Cabela's kinda trips me out 'cause we got the new giant fall/winter catalog, but it doesn't have the wiggy's sleep systems in it like on the website ; I'm still a fan though. Could you post a small review-like thing on the shell you got from them? I always was curious about their quality.

Blue Jays, I used to be a big fan of the anorak- style 'cause you get that little kangaroo pouch in the front, but decided it gets too hot for me IMO. Those custom Motorcyce jackets are cool. I used to live in Portland and everyone knows how many great things come outta that town (Benchmade, leatherman, criswell, al mar, etc.).

Skyline, try the shower dude!!

Midget, you're just plain HARDCORE. My roomate has family in Michigan and says it gets miserable. I don't like riding with a scarf- i get too hot- but the balacava seems like the best solution and Pearlizumi is my favorite cycling stuff too. Pearli stuff is kinda pricey and I hav no hook up for that stuff so I only have some amfib tights, armwarmers(awsome things for cyclists) and a vest.

Joe Talmadge, I know the feeling. I have had a variety of different 'utility vests' over the years, got rid of them all, and am think I may have found the answer thanks to RDomina, I can't wait to try one of these out...

extremefishin00, try out the Alchemy Jacket by Mountain Hardware or the Sigma SV by arc'teryx, these might fit the bill and the swishing/ poofy thing bothers me too, although IMO it has gotten better and hopefully will soon be on par with the amazing 'fit' they have engineered i.e. arcteryx or most 'softshells'- these things are amazing.

RDomina, THANKS.

Slide13, I have a mountain light and a Denali, but I stopped usin' TNF 'cause they cut their shell sleeves too short(try riding a bicycle in the drops), or maybe I am just ape-like in build...? As soon as I tryed Arc'teryx stuff, I IMMEDIATELEY noticed the nice sleeeve cut and die cut velcro...

Craigz, a tech jacket (at least my defenition) is a jacket made outta man-made materials (mostly) and used for very active sometimes specific outtings. The cut and styling has a distinctive 'technologically advanced' look to it. Feel free to add on to this def. anyone.
