Anyone else a Jacket Junkie???

I'll second the Filson Double Mac. It's warmer than overcooked oatmeal and it has plenty of cool pockets.

Me too. I have the light windbreaker version, and the heavier version (both 2.0 I think). The only thing I don't like are the collars -- it's a vest-type collar, I wish it had a standard fold-down collar like any other jacket. Around here I only wear a jacket from late fall to early spring, but when I do, I stuff that scottevest full of stuff.

Recently, I was given a sleeveless black jacket with about eight pockets, and it can be folded into a small clutch bag. Cool! :) :)

I can overdress or underdress for the weather, but if my throat gets chilled, I get sick. I need to keep wind off it, and scarfs are hard to keep in place. I like neckwarmers or headovers, like the Army wool version Shomer-Tec carries, or the Spec-Ops Recon Wrap for warmer weather.

Not only will they stay in place around your neck, but you can pull them up over your mouth and nose or even over your head like a hood. I carry my Recon Wrap in my back pocket, folded like a handkerchief. It's a great mask against airborne pollutants like woodsmoke, which gags me. The heavier, longer wool version still folds up into a Field Jacket pocket conveniently. Pulled up over my head with a watch cap on top, it eliminates the need for a hood or mask or balaclava.

I've had a couple of light-weight technical jackets over the years, but last year I got a Helly Hansen rain parka and pants. Very light but nothing, but nothing, got through them out walking in a blinding downpour. I also picked up a TAD Gear Explorer Shell, but I haven't had a chance to try it out yet. A few cool damp nights, it felt good, but I didn't even need to zip it up, so ...

The zipper on my trusty old LL Bean fleece jacket broke so it was a "good" excuse to get me a Mountain Hardwear Alchemy jacket today. While fitting the jacket, the salesman brought to my attention the Mountain Hardwear Synchro jacket which is a soft shell that's waterproof due to MH's proprietary Conduit fabric. Very nice! I had my heart set on the Alchemy so I got it. BTW, I'm sure some of you know this already, but if you're in New York City, check out Tents & Trails on Park Place just a few paces off of Broadway. I saved $50 on the Alchemy jacket. It's a good thing Paragon Sports didn't have my size in stock in the color I wanted or I would have bought from them; they sell full MSRP. Ugh!

Grnamin, Full MSRP is painful.

Esav, I was really into that TAD jacket a little under a year ago, but didn't like the $250 price tag for a non goretex item... I can't belive they reduced the price by more than half, shipped!!! Thanks for the link, I haven't checked them out for a while. I probably should just hop on BART and check the store out myself...:D

Golok, The only drawback of all my jackets, is I wish they did fold up like yours... I guess I won't be havin' cake...

Lenny, that IBEX stuff is COOL! There site is kinda screwy though... Thanks for the link.

All you scottevest people:
-Is the wieght really distibuted evenly?
-does it give you a kinda 'bulky' profile?
-How tough is this thing?
I'm really considering one o' these to go over a softshell, so I would appreciate y'all's (that's right, I said Y'all- I grew up in Texas) real-life experience with those nifty things.:)

EasEWryder: I've been silently following this thread. Thanks for starting it: Just in time, because I'm in the market for a new jacket.

Blue Jays: What Anorak are you using? I love the style and format of them.

I'd like to recommend Smartwool. I've got one of their Merino Jackets and Versa T-shirts's. While not totally waterproof they are very warm and toasty.

Any one have any recommendations for a good Three Season Jacket that will survive Ohio winters? Lighter the better.

Brian

No problem Bmstrong... I recommend the Theta AR or Beta AR by Arc'teryx. I got a Beta AR in the trade forums...(I hope this isn't too shameless:D )... I wear a Theta when it rains, but usually I have a softshell. I love my Mountain Hardware 'Alchemy Jacket', but when I feel like a hoodie I wear my Arc'teryx Sigma SV. I like really light stuff too 'cause I gotta layer here in SF, so I tend to always have a Jacket in my bag, along with packages and what not.;)

Good Evening All-

BMSTRONG, the anoraks I'm using now are either Nevica or Nike, depending on the outside temperature.

The Nevica has a hood that "rolls-away" into the stand-up collar, so it is very convenient if the weather turns ugly. Mine also has side zippers that go practically to the armpit to allow for easy on/off, but a drawstring pulls the jacket tight at the waist during skiing.

The Nike anorak is used primarily for running. It can be removed, turned inside-out and be stuffed into its own kangaroo pocket in the front. Very convenient garment.

Hope that helps,

~ Blue Jays ~

I broke a zipper on a leather jacket a few years ago and I didn't want to just trash it, so I sent off to Campmor for their Zipper Rescue Kit. It came with a little booklet about zippers and how they work and how to use the enclosed parts to repair them. It worked great! :D

Ya can't eat your heart out over prices going down! It happens all the time ... if you wait to buy them cheap, they go off the market in the size you need. :D

They aren't Gore-Tex, but ... the laminate they use might as well be, and the mesh lining works great. I went out tonight with a light-weight short-sleeve shirt under the Explorer Shell, 45 degrees and about 80% humidity ... yeah, feels like my skin is crawling, cool and damp. But I was comfortable in about 5 minutes of walking, it breathes so well, not clammy at all. Of course, I should wear it in the shower to see how well that works :p

Esav, what a coincidence! I was browsing through their catalog last night and saw it there. Looks like it's ordering time again. :D Thanks.
