Anyone else getting an iPad?

It is the dumbest thing Apple has come out with yet, and the sad thing is people will still line up to buy it. Makes me sad.
The dumbest thing they have done is charging people $2000 for a computer that has $900 worth of hardware.

The specs page is kind of buried under various "features" pages at the apple site, but I found it here:

http://www.apple.com/ipad/specs/

apple advertises the iPad as having 10 hours of battery life using wifi, movie or music time, though why music alone should have the same battery drain as video images is beyond me.

The basic model is wifi only, an upgrade model has wifi and 3G both. For only .1 lb. penalty, the 3G would be worth it to me based on my experience with my iPhone.

The iPad seems to fit what you are wanting it to do, so I say go for it and let us know what you think!

Isns't the 3G function basically to use it as a cell phone? And then you'd have to carry it on AT&T right? Not a fan of them. I use verizon.

Why is it dumb. I mean to each his own. But it seems like a neat gadget. It's an iPod touch with a giant screen. Exactly what I'd like to have.

No, 3G means you can access the Web through the phone network when you don't have wifi access. If you only want to use the web with your iPad at home or the office, where you have wifi connection, you don't need 3G. If you want to access the web pretty much anywhere you happen to be, you definitely need 3G. Phone calls aside, I use my iPhone to access the web through 3G for email and tons of apps when I am out of wifi range.

Last year I switched to AT&T from Verizon. I resisted doing that since the first generation iPhone came out. I didn't want to go with AT&T since everyone knew it was a slower network, so I waited for AT&T's exclusive contract with apple to end and iPhone access to come to Verizon or Sprint. Last year it became clear that still wouldn't happen anytime soon, so I jumped ship and signed up with AT&T.

Guess what, AT&T's 3G network is not slower than Verizon or Sprint, it's actually faster. What everyone thought they "knew" was wrong. The culprit is the iPhone itself, it's a resource hog. In the past, AT&T's network was always tested with iPhone units. Of course it came up slow. Last year the NYTimes conducted comparison tests of the 3G phone networks using the same equipment on each, and AT&T came up fastest. Who'd a thunk it? Apple won't say anything because they are the problem. AT&T won't say anything because they enjoy an exclusive deal with Apple, so they quietly continue to build their network speed, which is already number one. I've been surprisingly happy with AT&T and don't hate it like I expected to.

I think its a pretty cool idea, but one of the many reasons I got an iPhone was so I could get to 1 device
Agreed. I like my iPhone becuase its a phone, MP3 palyer, web browser, book reader, email, video viewer, and any number of other things, in one compact package. The bigger screen on the iPad would be nice for some tasks, but not nice enough for me to justify a second, much larger piece of electronics to cart around. ;)

I'm in for a 32gig 3G model, but might go all out for the 64gig by the time they are released.

I worked on the lighting crew for the press event announcing the iPad, and the damn thing is sweet.

Gotcha. I'm not much up on the 3G stuff. I switched from AT&T to Verizon simply because in my area AT&T was terrible. I couldn't get a signal hardly anywhere and since I switched haven't had any signal problems.

No iPad here. I've got a Netbook with a big hard drive and a Linux OS that's serving my needs just fine, price tag was about $300. I guess the only downside is that it probably isn't magical or revolutionary.
What's the appeal of the iPad? It's expensive, offers very little storage space and doesn't even run OS X.

+1, the iPad has zero appeal to me. My netbook does everything the iPad does but better. Except for an huge touch screen... I love my iPhone, but a touch screen on anything bigger than my iPhone is useless IMO, too cumbersome.

I can wait for the 4th or 5th edition when more than likely after the other *add-ons* they will add a phone to it as well. :foot:

I was thinking of getting myself an iPod Touch but now I have reconsidered and am after an ipad 64gb. Looks like it will be an awesome video and music player. Plus I can use it for downloadable books and wi-fi stuff as well. Looks to be a killer piece of gear. Any of you guys have one on order? I'm worried that the first batch may be glitchy. I might wait a few months to read some reviews. What do you guys think of this piece of gear?

i'm a little worried too that the first batch is going to be problematic as well...........

wait for the 2nd or third gen...., and then buy a good used one.....

iPad: bigger version of iTouch.
only a few hundred more!

For me definitely something to blow extra money on. For the same price you could get a fully loaded lap top or Custom Knife. :D

I don't have any use for such things, but I was reading about the marketing strategy that will be making the iPod people alot of money off of people buying the current version. These units have a non replaceable battery, and once the battery goes soft the customer has to bring the unit to a service depot for refurbishment.

The only appeal to me would be as an ebook reader and it's to expensive for that. A Windows based PAD will be more appealing to me that runs a full blown OS and can run just about any application plus has changeable batteries and more expansion would be more interesting to me.

I have saving my $ for a new iPhone when they hopefully come out this summer.
