Me personaly I don't know what you mean by "hard to work"? I've used 416, nickle silver, brass, bronze, 308, mild steel, and damascus. The 416 was nice but I didn't notice any real differance over nickle silver and I prefere the look of nickle silver over stainless most any day, especialy on a carbon steel knife. Just use sharp bits and belts and it works like a dream.
Now bronze is fast becoming my favorite gaurd material but the bronze I got will not solder and is a bigger pain than any of the other gaurd materials.
Heck I'm starting to go back to brass for a lot of working class knives. I am finding that a lot of my customers who use them prefere brass over stainless or nickle silver.
