Anyone else hate waterproofs ?

ECWCS Gen I was judged a disaster and replaced by Gen II that at least had vents. when that was unsatisfactory, real professional were hired and the novel concept of large-scale testing of prototypes as used to verify and improve decisions. The current issue has an insulated, water-repellent outer layer for real cold and water-repellent soft shell plus poncho for most other applications. Standing guard in heavy rain? Get out the heavy, hard-to-stuff, sorta breathable Gore-tex hard shell.

I do happen to own the Gen III system, as issued to me in 2000 while in the Marine Corps. And you are correct way better then I and II, and when worn properly and layered has always served me well. Thru many a mission and camping trip.

Heys pitdog,

you should try etaproof, it is a great natural watertight cotton that has been woven in a special way. I recently got a jacket made out of this and it really keeps you dry yet feels much more breathable than goretex. Its also not as loud and doesn´t have that plastic-like feel to it. I must say I really like that stuff.

I guess there are not many etaproof jackets around yet, a good (but also very expensive) example of etaproof gear is made by "klättermusen", a swedish factory. You could also buy the fabric and sew it yourself or let somebody you know do it. (That´s what I did and it saved me quite some money, although the fabric itself is rather expensive as well).

best regards,

l.

Hey buddy thanks for that I'd never heard of etaproof. I have just had a quick search on the net about it and it seems it is the same material as Ventile but with a DWR treatment added. It also seems there is some controversy over whether the DWR spoils the natural water repelancy of the fabric by affecting the ability of the material to swell and give a tighter knit when wet !!!! Interesting stuff !

Clothes are like knives - right tool for the job at hand.

Sometimes g-tex is required. Sometimes softshell is just right. Wool is awesome as well - heavy when wet, but retains a good amount of insulation ability.

I feel that modern fabrics work best if you want to really stay dry. I have a number of options, and choose the tool to meet the task.

I hate wearing just about anything synthetic. I'm a 100% cotton guy, although I do like my microfiber jacket.
