I picked one up about a week ago, I went out on a short hike today to try it out. I have to say, that other than the tactical look, it is really cool as far as first impressions. It chops very well, and was shaving sharp right out of the box. The handle seems to absorb a great deal of the impact, and didn't give me any hot spots. I took down a standing dead pine (7") with no problem, in fact it cut as well or better than my Wetterling camp axe. I then took some dead hard wood of about 3-4" around and cut a 3' piece, and used the head as a splitter, the neck of the hawk is steel connected to the head, sandwiched between the handle material, I used this as my impact point and batoned the head with ease down the log. I then took one half of the split board and flipped it around and used the hawk to shave a fire board. This was all done with ease. I thought that this is pretty good stuff for my first time out with it, it looks promising. I plan on carrying it on my next hike and attempting something more demanding. Gene

I bought the earlier model when it had the weak wooden handle, the axe,'hawk forum has a thread about this hawk and someone posted that SOG would machine the head and replace the handle with the fiberglass one for $20, it was 2 weeks to the day, when I got it back last week. I have yet to use it, but am glad you have favorable views on it.

In what regard? Breakage? Bad ergonomics? Just curious as to why some didn't like it. Gene

OK, I did a search...it worked finally. I see alot of angry words and bad opinions...wow. I had a great experiance, but mine has a fiberglass handle. I could deffinatly see that wood would be way to thin to handle any real load.

They seem to have a lot of the old style handles break. I wanted one for a while maybe I will stumble across one.
