I mostly agree re: walmart being pretty unamerican as a habitual shopping experience.*
With friends and occasional experiments, we've determined that a lot of the name brand stuff is of lower quality (and lower performance submodels of tools and even flea medicines) specially prepared for the wally world stock system.
The clothing isn't worth the gas money, let alone actually paying for it.
Now, I have occasional purchases I do make there. Ammo is about 90% of that (and that's not chinese made, either)
The other 10% is, in fact, camping supplies. I find that overall, the quality and selection is really, really poor. If you go back to a 1970s version of what you need for hiking or car camping, you find that if budget is a concern, you can get out there with a LOT less than we expect to take nowdays. Need to save money or get by on a budget? get a surplus Canuck 1983 pattern pack for $30, an old school couple GI ponchos and a used/surplus/whatever bag.
Car camping? oil lamp. Coffee can stove.
What do I buy at Wally World for outdoors use?
1: some first aid supplies. I'm selective about what, and it's limited mostly to alcohol pads, bandages, and tape.
2: extremely cheap, disposable, giveaway/loaner/spare gear. Throwaway ponchos, giveaway flashlights (though now I use the countycomm ones)
In general I find that walmart sacrifices everything to profit. Including me, if I let them.
Note:
* I'm well aware that countycomm gets stuff from China, as do most of the suppliers out there. I do try to pick and choose, and I'm aware, but not quite fanatic enough to go without. It's a continuum, not a binary solution set.
