... a pencil sharpener in their emergency kit? I keep a small no-weight plastic pencil sharpener in mine. (I even keep a pencil in there but that's not what the sharpener is for.) It's for making REALLY thin wood shavings for tinder quickly. That's its number one usage. However it's also for making REALLY sharp points for emergency arrows, fish spears, dead fall traps, etc. Sure, I could cut all these with my pocket knife, but it's not nearly as much fun as using a pencil sharpener! :D

I just had another thought.... (that makes three already this year! :) )
Why not carry a couple of 4" lengths of pencil-sized dowels as well. Talk about "DRY TINDER!" Freshly cut with the pencil sharpener. Again, almost no weight, no worries about getting them wet, easy to turn into very good tinder with the sharpener, and can be used as very hard 'points' for catching fish and small game.

so you find sticks that can fit inside and use those? Those could be tough to find. It sounds interesting though.

its a good idea, lirrle twigs come off of bigger sticks, but I think removing the bark would be a must or you would skruw up your sharpener.

Not a bad idea at all.

I wonder if fatwood pieces could be made to fit the sharpener? That would be hot.

Been mentioned before. Also don't get the cheap kind. People said their's broke first time out. Get contractors/handyman one.

Post a picture. I'm still skeptical as to how useful it could be in the field. Maybe I will pick one up at Home Depot and try it out this weekend while camping. If it works that would be great.

Actually the first time I saw it, I think it was longbow50 that posted it. Anyway, why not just carry pencils? You can light the shavings from a pencil, you can use it to write with, as a weapon and as a trap part.

I doubt it would be hard to find twigs that fit?You probally step on a million of them while walking thru the woods?

I think I saw Pitdog post up some pictures in the firesteel and tinder thread and I saw one with his gear. For the size, it's not a bad idea...something worth trying and if it works, great!
