I can honestly say that over the last few months i have either been on here looking at stuff.. or "research" as i like to call it than acutally spending time in my shop getting things done. Anyone else in this same boat? I'm sure i'd get twice as much done if i just got off this thing and went out for the hour a day even organizing things.

it is not a waste of time if you are learning something . Now if you know it all , well then maybe . I don't always find something new but when I do , I am sure glad I was looking . And of course me , it has something to do with forgetting things ( good old age) Hee HEE

I've been there. That usually happens when you start getting into making knives. It usually changes when you realize that there is no substitute for hands on work. Don't get me wrong you need to learn too but there has to be a balance between both.

I have the other problem... Spending time on here when I should be working (for my boss... Or my wife!)

I actually feel like I spend too much time on my workshop and tools when I should be getting hands on experience making knives!

It's all a matter of where you're at in the grand scheme of things!

I probably read more about knives than I sleep but I get even more shop time in than either... I think I'm obsessed! :D

I find that if I only have an hour or two I will make an excuse not to get out thee and do something. If I have 6-8 hours on a day off I can get motivated. I grind pretty slow so I like to have the time to do it and not be in a rush.

its inspiring, thats the most important thing to me. learning is good, but being inspired to do the things i already know to in a more perfect and consistent manner is more important than learning new things to become perfect at. i especially enjoy the tips i learn that makes things more time efficient.

Unfortunately, yup. Because of career and familial obligations it is research that is done because I do not have the time or ability to make it the bench. But, trust me I would way prefer to workin...

I don't know which I do more. I spend a lot of time here but I also spend a lot of time working on knives.

for me, at my stage of knife making I wouldn't say it's wasted time checking out this forum and a couple others. I've learned so much in the last year it's been a blast. Where else can you have constant access to the wisdom of such awesome craftsman? I imagine that back in the day you'd have to wait until then next hammer-in or knife show to get your questions answered. (unless you were lucky enough to have the phone number of a good knife maker) But you're right there has to be a balance of gaining the "head" knowledge here and "hand" knowledge in the shop.

where i am in my knifemaking, it's always valuable to me to be on here. problem i have is that i'll start by checking the "for sale" forums or to see if someone answered a post or thread that i'm interested in and BAM! i'm stuck... and there goes the hour i had extra to fit that guard or make the sheath. That being the case, i have learned more on here the last four years than the previous 20 of doing everything myself and reading magazines... this place is literally the best thing that's happened to my knives (and my clients) that i have done so far.

Definitely guilty of that, I'm waiting for a spray tank to fill reading this on my phone now. The wife says I'm on my phone all the time and wanted to know what I'm looking at so damn much.....now she don't ask.
