Anyone else with ZT0801 having problems with the pivot ?

Andy,

If there is clearance or lack of a better word, slop fit, between Ti and stainless shifter shaft(In my case, an MGW), clearance due to play will induce wear phenomenon. Some makers prefer using steel or synthetic insert, that also provide height adjustment along with an jam nut. I make mine, that is a good thing because I can directly control the required precision fit as well as custom fitted height by using an internal machined delrin bearing spacer and along with bypassing the complexity of an insert/jam nut.

I made several knobs with various material, T6 (light, soft but scratch easily, also don't like the warmth-its an excellent conductor from tunnel heat). 304 cres was nice. Delrin or G10 was ok. Exotic wood, beautiful but requires metal insert adapter, so its too bulky. Out of all, Ti is my favorite, poor conductor of heat and I like the rainbow effect from controlled high heat exposure after extensive mirror polishing - sort of an halo effect.

Back to the subject of knife. I am trolling forums and sites, waiting for Zt, CRK and the likes to produce the future knife I am waiting with the attributes and more such as some of those, incorporated on the Domino. Enabling me to flip without restrain, its a toy for me no less. I do like the 0801CF, CRK and others but I am holding back due to my expressed opinions.

Sorry folks for the Hijack! Aloha.

You need a Reate D9 / District 9 Storm Flipper.

Caged ceramic bearings, ride on hardened steel races that are inserted in the titanium.

I have had no issues with either of my 0801's. Pivot has been fine. For anyone that intends to loctite the pivot, be sure to clean the internal and external thread surfaces thoroughly in addition to the 24 hour wait before using it.

If the bearings are wearing grooves into the faces of the Ti, you are over tightening the pivot. Proper pivot tension will be when there is no side to side blade play. Any tighter than that serves no purpose, it just increases wear on all the moving surfaces that are making contact. This minimal amount of tension will result in a much smoother flipping blade. Holding the blade while you open and close it will let you feel the difference in smoothness between just enough tension and too much tension. When overtightened you will feel every surface imperfection as it moves. The fact that the creator of the video review actually states that you really need to crank down on the pivot on bearing knives confirms for me that he is considerably less knowledgeable than he asserts he is.

As I mentioned in another thread, Mikkel Willumsen CWC folder has the bearings running straight on the G10 on one side.

Just a noob here, so feel free to disregard or bash me as needed. For any of you guys that have never used Loctite before, only use a sparse amount on the threads. I have found it best to use something like a q-tip soaked with Loctite to dab the necessary amount onto the threads. Too much Loctite could possibly cause disassembly issues in the future.

Now back to the regularly scheduled bashing of fellow members.

I agree, take proper care of your balls and they will last a lifetime. Don't smash them!

That review is so full of BS I don't even know where to start, nor do I have the time to write all the points down.

Unless that guy has a Doctorate in Physics, Chemistry, and Engineering I'm calling it a case of misinformation...like most reviews on BoobTube.

Its pretty much the same with any bearing application. With conical bearings you can have some preload ,with ball bearings you want to just "touch down" then back off a bit. Ive been in the machining trade for 40 years and the fastest way to make a ball bearing fail is to over tighten them.

I much prefer his videos to yours. And it has nothing to do with the content.

I think Sticks videos are too short too....

I mean, come on, how can you NOT talk about a knife for 31 minutes??

I got a good 15 minute nap in while watching it and didn't feel like I missed a thing :)

Time to step up your game Stick!!!

Today I finally saw theapostleP review of ZT-0801 and it seems that he thinks that the pivot is the main problem of the knife loosening with each flip of the blade. I went to check on mine and it does not seem to have the same problem. On the same note too he seems to fancy LionSteel SR1 which seems to have the same type of pivoting system or am I missing something here ?

Anyone else with similar experience ?

I've had my 801 since its release and the pivot is exactly where it was upon arrival.

mine did come loose out of the box, upon approx 20 flips, i did blue loctite it, and now it seems to be just fine...

I have a couple of 0801s since they first came out. No problems here, but I'm not using them anything like daily. They are in the rotation for my heavy tactical office ninja duty. I've yet to see a time when the blade wouldn't fly out or cut open a package once deployed. Of course, I'm not trying to combat baton through a telephone pole or anything, so I'm mostly a poseur.

The pivot on my 801 came loose relatively easily, as would the pivot on any flipper that fires hard. If only there was a tremendously obvious solution to this problem...

Oh wait, there is. Locktite! I locktited mine and after incessant flipping it still holds the pivot in perfectly. I don't know what TheApostleP is doing wrong but that certainly isn't the typical experience. I've had no problems with my 0562CF, which he also mentioned has the same "issue".

Although everyone should take an scientific bloviating from him with a very big grain of salt... pretty sure he espoused young earth creationism in one video.

I don't know about the 0801 pivot coming loose, but I do know that watching that dudes videos was a waste of time. Definite know it all arm chair jockey.
