Hey knife people,

Not long ago my mom asked me this question "why do you need all these knives?? Can't you have one good one that does it all?"

I simply answered: "well i need a specific knife for a different task, and besides i love collecting them"

So MY question is has anyone ever asked you this question?? Or maybe a similar one??

OR

Have you ever though to yourself "why can't i have JUST ONE good knife for everything??"

Interested in your answers :)

No.... but I can relate to why a non-knife enthusiast would ask something like that. I remembered a while back I watched a youtube video and this guy laid out 6 folders and I thought he was NUTS for owning that many knives.

As of now I have 9 folders and 4 fixed blades.... if anybody were to ask me why I have so many I'd simply tell them I'm a knife collector; which is true. If I only saw knives as "tools" I wouldn't have that many, because the truth is you CAN do most tasks with only 1-2 knives.

I've been asked that as well. My usual answer is do you only have one kitchen knife?

yep, from my wife on every new knife i get.

impossible task. every blade shape and length has a different use...other than cutting stuff.

back to my wife....problem is she's right cause when i get a duplicate (same class of steel, same blade shape, same length, etc) but a different brand...i can't really argue with her. in fact it has inspired me to shed myself of the weaker duplicates i already have and only buy duplicates if they are low cost, but high quality (relative term of course, but meaning low cost to me).

yeah i have been asked this. i tell them to mind their business. btw casper i like your youtube videos

i get ask this all the time as well... in fact just yesterday! i just respond with a simple "no, you can never have too many."

Yes, but I ignore the comments. I make my money, and I spend it on whatever I want. I won't have people telling me I have too many knives, because ya' know what? I don't go around telling people how to spend their own money. I have my hobby, and they have theirs. With my knives, I don't go crazy (like many people here do, :D) but I still buy a few every once in a while. I have a few users, and the rest are part of my collection. It is a fun hobby, and I enjoy it.

except more people than one might realize only do have one knife or only use one knife even though they have kitchen block sets full of knives all over their counter tops. so they'll shoot that logic full of holes quickly. although personally i think you're right.. the point you made is logical, and should be the easy way to get the average person to understand. if they already grasp the concept of each kitchen knife was designed for a particular task.

I tell 'em, some people collect stamps...Some people collect coins...I collect something that I can use while collecting them.

I'm not a collector so I only have under a dozen blades at any one time. I keep buying them in the effort to only have one blade for every task. Meaning one for the kitchen, one for edc etc. I've been asked why I keep buying knives and then sell them but I usually don't give them the full answer just because people don't understand. No one would understand why I have knives in 3 different grinds nor do they really understand what the difference would be. Or even what a grind is. To me the goal is to get the most efficient tool possible for the job and one that looks cool while doing said job.

My response: If you can find one, let me know. I'll want it.;)

Technically, you only need one pair of underwear, but isn't it nice to have multiples of some things?

I have actually asked myself this more than anyone else, and i have come to the conclusion that i have one knife for everything except i need a good fixed blade. my answer to that problem is ready to be heat treated.

i have been asked that also my dad carries a cheapo knife and he didnt have it with him. he needed it to stick in the dirt and cut a root to a bush. he said let my sse your kife and i said no and he said why then i said because you gonna stick it in the dirt and tear it up. then he said why do you have knives if you dont use them, i replied i use them all the time for opening packages, cutting food, getting splinters out, BUT NEVER STICKING IT IN THE DIRT
