That sucks big time... a friend of mine had his luggage riffled through several times, as he used to travel a lot for work purposes selling TAG watches. He also did the zipper tie thing... and used to video him putting the luggage in with a handheld, and then it coming off the conveyor belt. He also documented exactly what he put into the bags, which I believe would have been documented anyway.
He came back into Heathrow after flying from Italy, and videoed his bag coming through on the conveyor belt and sure enough, his black zipper tie had been replaced with a blue one, and he had 3 watches missing...
He went straight to the luggage desk, and within minutes, had the manager down and apologising something chronic.. he had proof there and then that someone had theived from his bag...
An extreme measure, but he was dealing with expensive watches, and was tired of the extra paperwork that his sales company made him do, for every watch that got stolen...
A colleague of his in the same 3 years my friend worked there, doing the same flying abroad etc, never had a single watch taken... and no-one knows why... bad luck I guess on my friends part...
Providing that your not in the wrong, and you have a case to argue, you can be very firm and very pressing and get a lot done quickly, but it depends on the company I guess...
Best of luck getting that all ironed out... its just a simple pain in the rear end when these things happen, the hoops you have to jump through get tiring very quickly...
