Anyone ever made a damascus khukri?

I have seen pictures of many types of khukris but never one that is made of damascus steel.

Is it against tradition or the norm to have one made of such material?

I am thinking perhaps the reason would be one concerning cost.

Such being the case, is there ever going to be one made of damascus steel? That would be quite a breakthrough.

Hello

I have handled one by knifemaker Vince Evans, and it was the only Western made khukuri I ever seen that looked a felt exactly like the real thing. About US$ 2,000.00, if I can recall, and well worth it.
Never seen an original, though.

Yes, in fact I have come across one, in one of the forums. It's an early Nepali designed khuk (15 inch long blade) which has a pattern-welded steel (damascus) blade. It was probably made after 1815 when new treaties would have made the import of such steels from India to Nepal easier. I'm guilty of not having the exact reference to this post handy.

Not surprisingly, the khukuri Johan refers to is from John Powell's collection.

I had thought of trying to get the Bishwakarmas to make one, but a) I couldn't find a big enough piece of damascus in time to take it with me to Nepal, and b) since they're not used to working with damascus, I was worried that I'd ruin a $500.00 piece of steel. Also, I don't think that a damascus khukuri would lend itself to chopping. It would have been a presentation piece.

Berk, you're right about JP having such a khuk, but the one I actually referred to, is to be found at the following address (I felt so guilty I just HAD to search for it):

Please be careful how you call up this address - seems to be important to use lower case and capitals are shown. I've read the wootz/damascus/pattern welded steel controversy, so I don't know if this satisfies you, Golok?

To Craig, Ivan, Johan and the rest of the guys, thanks for all the information on the subject.

I have taken a peek at the damascus khukri. Looks very interesting and unique.

That reminds me, there's one shop in town that claims to have a 200-year-old khukri. I must have take a closer look at that khukri.

Actually, I have seen it once. The proprietor claimed that it was very old. The blade was rusty. It has a short blade, about 6 to 7 inches.

His asking price was more than what I thought it was worth. Still, I think I shall make a return trip to scrutinise that khukri again.
