Never used that one but I have heard that these guys are "good people" , their jigs and tooling is good quality . That being said ........... here we go.......... cause I know that you know this was coming KMG , for just a few dollars more you can be set-up with a 10" Variable speed and when you set the 2 next to each other ( please don't take this in the wrong way cause I'm sure it is a fine grinder ) I think you'll see how much more beefy the KMG is .
What set-up (platen, 8" wheel, 10" wheel?) is best for the first grinder purchase? I am a novice, making knives and tomahawks along with my general blacksmithing.
KMG-10 package. 1 flat platen, 1 10" contact wheel. Don't forget the extra tool arm. You can buy it with no motor and use any old motor you can find for a while, then upgrade to a varaible speed setup as the cash flow allows.
That is the grinder I have been using for the last year and and a half. Leeson motor, Baldor speed control and Bader wheels. No problems and no complaints. I did put a plate of hardened 01 on the platten but that is the only mod it has needed. Both times I tried to stall it out I destroyed the belts. It has plenty of horse power.
The grinder has been changed a bit from the picture on Al's website. The idler pulley is now aluminum and the drive pulley is crowned a bit. The tensioning lever is much bigger now for more leverage. The on/off switch is now on the speed control and not seperate like the pics shows.
I did have to make a 220vt extension cord/adaptor for it but that was easy. When you go to hoist it out of the crate you will see it has more then enough beef to it. $1400 delivered and ready to work out of the box.
