Anyone fallen in love with a knife they used to hate?

I used to think the Gravitator was butt-ugly. I'd seen it in pics, and in real life in the case at a local knife store.

But one day, in the same knife store, it didn't look so ugly to me. I asked to see it. Once I had it in my hand, I fell in love. Now it is very high on my "to buy" list.

Does this happen to anyone else?

I would have to say Busse knives, Randall, and the Strider SMF and SNG.

Now I cant get enough of them.

Buck 110.

When I was a teenager, I thought it was old-fashioned and heavy and with no charm whatsoever in this "modern" and "hi-tech" world.

Ok I was naive and I have just made a confession statement above. :D

Now I own two of them. One of hard use and one for storage/pass down.

This was my experience with the BK-9.

When I first encountered the knife, I thought it looked ridiculous with its big bulbous handle scales and unflattering green sheath. I was looking for a nice heavy duty working knife at the time, and I ended up purchasing something else instead. Over the course of a year, I found myself eyeing the Becker more and more during my trips to my local knife shop. It seemed to me that the shortcomings of the blade I had originally purchased were not likely with the BK-9 design, ugly as it is. I ended up purchasing one, and I've never looked back. It kicked off my appreciation of tough, utilitarian designs. I'm still not a fan of the sheath, but the blade itself is fantastic.

All the best,

- Mike

The DODO!

Man, I hated that knife when I saw it. Now it's my number 1 EDC and just in time for it to dissapear, unfortunately. This is the best knife no one will ever use.

BM 630 Skirmish. At first i didn't like it much. I played with it a little in the store and it dind't impress me much. After much research, I purchased it at a great price and I love it! The slicing belly gets the job done and the size is impressive.

Guilty as charged. When I first saw them I thought both the Buck 110 and the Spyderco Military were ugly as sin. Now they've both become favored users.

The thing is I don't think I would've bought either knife if it wasn't for Bladeforums. Seeing all the pictures and reading all the reviews helped the knives to grow on me. Man this place is a bad influence.

Tracker did it for me.... I was looking for a camp knife that I had seen in a magazine a long time ago. Not sure what it is to this day, it had bowl shaped div it in the handle for a bow drill fire kit to hold the spindle, and a few other features that I have forgot about. Anyway after a long try at relocating this knife I kept seeing this Tops tracker knife every where... I thought it was the ugliest thing I had ever seen. After seeing it so many times, and reading up on it I ended up buying one, and it eventually led me to take the basic class from Mr Tom Brown Jr. After having it for a while, and reading up on it more, I discovered that it was not the original version, and hence discovered Mr. Becks version....Now that is a real work of art in my opinion...

Spydercos in general  I am not to the point of love but I am warming to spydies. Maybe it is because we are both cheap :D

Benchmade 940.

I just never thought I would like it with the reverse tanto and all. Plus green handles, come on. After holding and using it it's my favorite knife. Actually it's at a tie with the Griptilian.

Spydercos,, i thought that they looked funny .. then i bought one to see what it was that every one liked ... i love them now !

swamp rat knives. I thought they looked pretty darn ugly until I saw what the thing can do! chopping through concrete blocks like it was butter, now I'm waiting to get one.

It happened to me with Spydercos, I thought they were too strange to be good knives. Now they are my #1 choice in folders.

I use to think the Schrade Sharpfinger was quite useless. But after some mods that include a hollow grind, longer cutting edge, and removal of the front radically sweeping end of the blade, it is now a great no frills full tang user. Of course a kydex sheath made it that much better.

I used to 'hate' my Busse BM-e, and now we go everywhere together. It's a good knife(currently my only big knife)...now I love it!
