anyone find it hard to go back to a cheapie?

I can't find myself buying a sebenza or a strider or anything of the sort, for me their fit and finish isn't worth the extra $200 they are putting on the knife. The idea of customizing a sebenza sounded cool till they told me it would cost like $800 for a "small image of minor detail". Oh well, so for me it is Benchmades they are just nice enough for a user without feeling like you've damaged a major investment. Their service of course is bar none the best in the business. Though I've owned several Microtechs and if they had the service of Benchmade I'd pay the $300-400 for the badassness of it.

I can afford the occasional Spyderco or Benchmade and enjoy them, but my most often used (non-kitchen) knife is probably a red Alox Farmer. It's not a bad knife, it's very useful and it cost me, what, 24 dollars? But I promise I'll scrape some paint with a Sebenza or a custom as soon as I can afford those. :)

I wouldn't have a problem going back to something simpler. I've entertained selling all my knives except the gifts and inherited ones, getting a Queen Country Cousin, a large Opinel, and putting a good handle on my M2 scandi knife and let that be it.

Maybe it's age setting in, but price doesn't matter--quality does.

Regardless of name or $$, there's no substitute for doing one's own research, and handling the product. Any knife I carry should cut what I ask it to--within reason. It's up to me to match the tool to the job. If a knife can't do reasonable work or match with a likely chore, I get rid of it. If it does it's job, I keep it and put it to the correct use. When I know I won't want to bring back an edge after a particular task, I pick a different knife.

If I sold everything but my customs, I could buy more customs. Would that make me happier? I doubt it; I enjoy the variety just like I enjoy using the variety of the other tools I own.

Pardon me for dragging up an old thread but I remembered something that was posted previously.

Well, a promise is a promise. :)

The difficult part was finding something with paint on it since it's been a while since we did any renovating. :D

Nope. I just started carrying my Victorinox Tinker that I bought a couple years ago. I don't know why, but it caught my attention while I was looking through my knife chest and has been in my pocket all week. It has really been nice to have the screwdrivers and other non-blade tools available while at work.

For me, cost is irrelevant. It's simply quality and utility. These are the two knives I carry. The Sebenza was a gift from a dear friend and gets 90% of my pocket time. The MiniGrip is my "beater." From a quality/utility standpoint, they are equals in my eyes.

If I lost the Sebenza, I'd miss it from a sentimental standpoint, but there's nothing it can do that the Benchmade can't and I certainly wouldn't feel as if I was carrying an inferior tool with the MiniGrip in my pocket.

Thanks for that! It's always refreshing seeing pretty knives actually being used. Now go scratch that titanium up. It looks too pristine. :D:thumbup:

Cheers! Actually, I need to send the knife in for refurb, the other side is polished and far less pretty. Just had to get the knife used some and the pic out of the way. :)

Was having just that conversation with a buddy this morning. No - you can't go back and that's how you know you are snake bit in this particular hobby.
True of most hobby/passions BTW. High-end Audio, watches, Firearms, etc. Once you have tasted or sampled the top levels within your chosen area - you are forever changed.
It is both a Blessing AND a Curse.

I can't rotate my my knives like I used to. I find myself carrying just one these days. The rest sit. I can hear them calling me when I leave my knife room.

I would have a problem carrying a cheaper knife, but not a less expensive knife, as there are differences. I do this a lot. Today I'm carrying a John W Smith SD-3 folder, tomorrow I might carry my ZT0500 which is certaintly "cheaper" than the JWS. Now if we are talking about S&W and knives of that ilk, then I would not be carrying them.....at all!

I have found that several brands of slipjoints, Steel Warriors, and Hammer Brands are two of them, that are really inexpensive knives that are solidly built with great fit/finish, and razor sharp edges from the box. I don't mind carrying these at all. In fact I have the SD-3 in my right front and a Hammer Brand 4-bladed Canoe in my left pocket.:)
