While my skin does OK with moderate sun exposure, i know my limits.
I use spf50 on my hands if i'm gonna be out (especially driving), and am inclined to wear long-sleeve cotton shirts if in the backcountry. If in the city, i can get away with short-sleeves. I also put SPF on my legs/feet b/c in the summer i hate wearing pants/socks/shoes. For me, sunglasses/goggles are a year 'round necessity - especially in winter with reflected light off snow.
From an anthropological side of things (a good % of my grad/post-grad studies involves anthropological methods), a focused study on desert dwelling people groups (the Bedouin and Berber peoples especially) will turn up some amazing facts on how these cultures survive/thrive in sunny, arid landscapes. Maybe a study on the desert dwelling Native Americans (both Central and North America) would be more relevant (indigenous materials, etc) and also reveal some incredible information. However, the Berber (as well as Bedouin peoples) are still living/using many of the generational skill sets needed for their environment and information is more easily accessible.
