Anyone Going to Solvang??

Bob, I'm not sure that rule applies to Solvang. A dealer friend of mine sent me a list of and pictures of knives a maker plans on having at the show. The maker sent the list and pictures to him and to others, I assume.

I've checked now to find out - and it looks like, although the show format follows the AKI, this rule doesn't. No biggie.

Best,

Bob

Kevin-

Something just occurred to me - am I not correct that, when it comes to the San Diego AKI, it's a bigtime violation of the rules for any invited maker to show images to anyone of the knives he or she is taking?

Did this kind of rule not make it into the Solvang "rulebook"?

Best,

Bob Betzner

Bob, would probably had been best if you had checked with Dave Harvey regarding the rule before making your above post.

You sort of implied that Larry Fuegen had broken a Solvang rule in sending me photos on just your assumption that Solvang and the AKI shared all the same rules.

If there had been such a rule, I'm sure Larry would not have sent me his knife photos.

Kevin, you are reading more into this than you should. I am not gifted with 20/20 hindsite, sorry.

And there was no such implication in my post, but I do see an implication in this post of yours, since it is stated plainly enough. Enough said.

Bob,
I've read your posts elsewhere about "cloned shows" and this very same matter and while there may "no implication" in your post here I can only state that I think Kevin is spot on with post-reply to you.

You can say what you want, Paulie, but Bob is PROMOTING the Solvang show by his posting, and if he made a small gaffe, it wasn't worth calling him to the carpet.....so since I am short enough, remind me to punch you in the balls at Blade.:D

Frankly, if I had half a brain, I would have called Dave Harvey before doing this thread/post stuff and sorted it out then. I kick myself for the way this turned out looking.

Best,

It's all good Bob. Wish I were attending this show.

In another thread we are debating whether or not this could be considered a
golden age of knives, it's probably more a golden age for knife collectors ;) considering all that available including the exceptional knife shows. One could attend a dozen knife shows this year and still miss some spectacular ones.

I'll be there.

Win, looking forward to catching up. It has been a long time.

Bob B, would like to meet you. I am also a big fan of art knives.

Of course, would like to meet anyone else from the forum.

See you there,
Thor

Dumb question. We are all talking about meeting each other at the show. How will we know who the other forum members are?

I have been to many shows only to hear later x, y, and z was there and I had no idea what they look like and so could have walked right by them.

Check your emails, Thor.

Getting close, I haven't been to a show in 18 months and I am psyched. Be good to see you again, Thor, and to meet some others.

I'm expecting the makers to have some killer pieces. I've seen some of what's coming and heard about others and it's going to be a great show.

I just mailed Dave Harvey out (2) knives sent to me from a little known maker from Canada. He's German, I think...??! ;)

Photos soon.

Coop

Coop - Here's a mini report.

I didn't really follow all of the makers as much as I would have needed to in order to give a good report. But I got to meet several forumites including Martin Reingold, Thor Heine, Win Heger, Ron Lawson, Dave Ellis - all guys I wanted to meet but hadn't. We all enjoyed it and ourselves - superb time.

Spoke with Dave Nittinger again, Don, Hume, Bruce Voyles, Jim Pardee, Don Guild, Walter Hoffman, Paul Shindler, Mark Strauss, of course, Dave Harvey. And lotsa others. Hard to remember everyone I saw again.

I also finally met Phil Lobred. Talked for probably a couple hours - quality time about one of our favorite subjects. Look forward to more of the same.

Also, I was happy to meet Wolfgang Loerchner for the first time - along with his wonderful daughter - being that he lived close to where my forebearers settled in Canada. And he let me practice a little of the few words I happened to remember from when I was once fluent in German. We had a very nice chat about the forum and both our interests in it.

I don't know who sold this or who sold that. But as to whether my favorite maker did well - he sold out all of his Solvang knives on the first draw. And then as soon as the dealer stuff came out to sell, he had four others he brought with him - and they all sold out. Sounds like "successful" to me.

A really good crowd, alot of excellent knives. Alot of the makers put out some special effort on their pieces - and what I was hearing from people was that the show hit the mark.

It absolutely made a very, very good transition from show to invitational, in both the knives and feel of the show as a whole.

And did people swap drop tickets - Duh. Dave Harvey included instructions in the envelopes that asked people not to do it, but I suppose once the genie is out, it's hard to re-bottle.

EDIT: I was shocked at how many people, incuding forumites here, had never seen the book "500 Knives". It may not be Dr David Darom's quality production, but it is a seminal display of some hot, hot knives. It's a no brainer purchase, but many didn't even know of it's existence. And Dave Harvey even sells 'em at Nordic Knives.

Oh, almost forgot. I dropped for around 10 knives, won none the first round. Second round, someone must have already been broke from the first round - because I went away the drawn #2 winner on the Likarich ivory NYS in the attachment below. Just a purely beautiful Loveless style. Goes nicely with my new Bruce Bump.

See you at Blade.

Steve, the best part of the whole show was the time I spent with your neighbor. He is a special person, not something I say about many people -
and it's easy to tell he values your friendship.

Glad you finally got to hang out with Phil Lobred, Bob.

One of the great things for me has been the ability to hear the stories first hand.....and you got to hear some too!

Let us know what your overall impressions of the show were when you have time to gather your thoughts...I, for one, will be raptly attentive.

Fyi, my wife flew in and actually controlled at some points, a decommissioned fighter-trainer jet from Russia today, and I wouldn't have missed that for the world(not this exact plane, but we have not been though the pics yet)
