Anyone got experience with smokepoles?

Got the rifle which apparently came with 100 rounds of brown bear surplus as well as a bayonet and ammo pouch as well as 80 cash. Figure I'll put that combo up for trade for a blackpowder and see where it goes!

-Edit-

Got a possible trade going for a Thompson Center Black Mountain Magnum. .50 cal, comes with a flask of FFF, speed loader, powder, measure, extra flask, plenty of sabots and caps. Just want's the rifle, bayonet, and 60 rounds. Worth it in my eyes.

The nugget ain't a bad rifle! If I were you I'd go through those 100 rounds before getting rid of it at least!

I've got an abundance of rounds and two more nuggets sitting in the gun cabinet. I got this nugget as more of a bartering piece. The numbers are force matched etc. so it's not really collectible, whilst the two I had before I recently got this one are.

stop, and RUN away, Buy a bow. Black powder is a pain. I have and still own min 15 different models since 1974. Encores, omegas, traditions, CVAs , Knights, Springfields, real ones, Real 1864 "polkstock" they all are hard to clean and require it every time you hunt and today's should be illegal in all states, because if they shot 200 yards , they ARE NOT BLACK POWDER IMO. If I wanted one I would get a $100 max hammer small primer cap gun, no sight and shot the heck out of it. plenty of Butter in the tube and pack it tight. put electric tape over the barrel and hope for the best. .50 cal. only because the sabots are easy to find and the powder is to. Honestly, they are not that romantic. But if you can find a real smooth bore 1860 shot gun, well you are talking a different world. I have a double and have killed a lot of meat with it. I am just not a Jim Shockey fan shooting 200 yard at a deer. good luck

I've got several bows myself, some self made, some professionally made. Figure blackpowder is a hobby I want to get into! Starting with this blackpowder rifle and if I don't like it I can trade it off for something else! I've shot blackpowder before and had a blast (no pun intended) and although the mantra of cleaning, lubing, and all get's a bit dull it's still worth it for the overall experience.

That and the blackpowder hunters get two weeks after the rest of us rifle/bow folks. Lucky sons of guns.

Here she be. Got what's pictured on top of about 3/4 a flask of FFF powder, a few more tools, and about 50 caps.

I would avoid Spanish no matter who imports them because basically their proof standards are lower and not much different than a standard heavy load. Which means each full load shot is a proof load in your gun.

Italian, no matter what US importer or brand is best...rifled bores foul quickly and expect broken rods with inexperience and have still rod of just under bore size for pounding when something sticks halfway down. For fun and easier cleaning you might consider a smoothbore which is plenty accurate with CONSISTANT loading/ramming pressure/etc out.to 75 yds and throws a bore-sized ball.....Otherwise get a bore which hollowbase minies are available if rifled bore a must, and invest in Windex for cleaning....lube of beeswax cut with vaseline and maybe mineral oil melted together in microwave...in a container which will not melt from heat of contents...it need not be an exercise in buying modern supplies....some minies, caps and black powder and lube is all you need....minies cannot be driven as hard or you will blow a skirt but bp hunting is SUPPOSED to be primitive get-in-close hunting....or was supposed to be....but considering the deer overpopulation in many areas i think state hunting regulators are giving the green light to modern.muzzleloading to avoid alarming tree huggers...

Oops did not see page 2....dump the modern projectiles and powders....otherwise you may as well buy a Ruger Redhawk and shoot 185 gr JHP at 1800-1900fps out of it with considerable less hassle (wink!)

Saving the sabots that came with it for deer season, gonna start casting my own minie balls seeings as I bought a lee mold. The issue is no real black powder is available around me so I'm going to have to make due till I go down to southern Maine to the big sporting goods and shooting stores.
