This is awesome! It's very easy to assume ancient people were simple people. Makes you wonder just where we'd be right now if the Dark Ages hadn't happened and Rome continued on through to today...
 
It's always worth remembering that the earliest folding knives were not carried primarily as tools, or even as weapons, but as eating implements..

The fixed eating knives (and forks) were often extremely ornate, and very highly prized. There's even at least one painting of Queen Elizabeth 1 with her eating trouse, worn on her person, and deliberately included as a symbol of wealth and good taste.

At the other end of the spectrum, I've been enjoying carrying this lately! ;) :D
