Dave Cole (DCKnives) got me started doing inlays back in 01. IIRC, he has a tutorial somewhere around here. I'll see if I can find it or I'll contact him for a reference.
I am doing a bowie sheath with a snakeskin inlay. My main sheath leather is 8-10 oz veg tanned pre stained. My main question is what oz should I use for the backing of the snakeskin and how far should it extend past the window of my heavy leather?
Should it be the same as my top piece all the way into the welt.If I do this the top will be two pieces thick and the bottom one piece. In this case should I just use a thin liner leather so that the entire sheath is lined and my exotic is between my liner and the heavy outside ,just glued so that it can be stitched around my window cut into the heavy top piece?
Hey Stuart, for knives with no guard and extreme sharp pointy tips I put JB weld on and in the welt at the tip prior to final assemble be it pouch or blade sheath style. When the JB hardens and the sheath is glued up it forms a barrier to help keep the pointy tip from piercing the tip of the sheath should the new owner be a little too aggressive or unattentive when inserting the knife.
